A True Standout And An Amazing Value In The Wild Wild West Of High End Audio Cables And Power Cords: The Synergistic Research Foundation XL

06-04-2026 | By Robert S. Youman | Issue 145

It’s been quite some time since I have reviewed a Synergistic Research product. Over the last few years, I have experimented with several extraordinary new flagship offerings from some of the most respected industry leaders in several different categories. This includes cables, power cords, power conditioning, ground conditioning, and isolation platforms. Each brand and component had their own specific attributes for both design and sound quality. The competition and comparisons can be almost overwhelming. Despite all of this, I keep coming back to Synergistic Research for my “go to” in virtually every category.

Yes, yes, it’s a very subjective thing, but for this reason, I am always pumped up each year to visit the Synergistic Research room at AXPONA to see what might be new. The 2026 show was no different. You can always feel the excitement in the room and see it in Ted Denney’s eyes as he rolls out his latest unique and innovative technology. As Founder, Proprietor and Chief Designer at Synergistic Research, he continues to amaze!

This year, Ted had the audience spellbound with several new products, but the two that really caught my attention were the new Quark Music Server and the new Atmosphere LogIQ Acoustic Field Generator. To be clear, at an MSRP of $8995, the Quark is not a scaled down version of the highly acclaimed flagship Voodo Music Server, which has an MSRP of $14,995. Per Ted, the Quark is “fundamentally a rethought design”, and at a much more affordable price point. This includes a smaller chassis, a simplified circuit design, a more refined power supply, and an improved antenna implementation. The end result is a sound quality that is said to be very very close to that of the Voodo.

The LogIQ is a stunning new AI-driven component that really had my head spinning. One might describe it as "an intention-controlled ambient management system." With a final MSRP as yet to be determined, the LogIQ manages both a room's ULF (ultra low frequency) and ELF (extremely low frequency) waveforms to optimize soundstage, depth, and tone. From their listening seat, users can verbally request specific sound performance like tighter bass or wider staging through a dedicated control app. As time rolls on, the app learns more and more about the specific listeners musical taste, and can then automatically adjust for that taste. It is one of the most creative and forward-thinking uses of AI that I have yet experienced! Click here to see Ted’s more detailed explanation of both products.

Synergistic Research Foundation XL Cables And Power Cords

All of the above activity at AXPONA lead to an interesting discussion with Andy Wiederspahn (President, Synergistic Research), about potential product reviews for 2026. Even beyond the Quark and LogIQ, there were plenty of opportunities that highly interested me. Again, I have reviewed many of Synergistic Research’s flagship cables and power cords over the years. I mentioned to Andy that I often get requests from readers to review something halfway up the product line, possibly with a simpler design and a lower price point. If you are familiar with the Synergistic Research portfolio, you might know that these top of the line products are loaded with cutting edge technology and you get what you pay for – incredible results!

I suggested that this time around, I should take a look at something much more basic, but something that might also just “blow your hair back” for value. My intent was to clearly challenge Andy with this statement, and he did not flinch for even one second. Thus we quickly came to an agreement on the Foundation XL cables as the choice for this review. After we said our goodbyes, Andy’s last words were that I was going to be pleasantly surprised if not astonished by the Foundation XL. I was very excited for the opportunity!

Design

There seems to be an affinity for Synergistic Research to use the terms “rethought” and “evolve” rather than “trickle down,” unlike most manufacturers when discussing how they have learned from the development of their flagship products. I am only guessing, but I feel confident that the message here is that these products, even at their lower price points, can truly stand on their own. They have their own unique design and product strengths that can provide both exceptional sound and satisfaction, well beyond expectations. I can attest to this. The Foundation XL is an excellent example.

Like the SRX XL flagship, the Foundation XL has double the amount of 6N Silver Air Strings as one of it’s core geometry and transmission design choices. The 99.9995% pure silver conductors are said to be faster, more resolving and with additional body and texture. The same innovative UEF compound used in the SRX XL, is also implemented in the Foundation XL to support it’s Matrix Shielding, which is claimed to greatly lower the noise floor for improved signal transmission and response. In addition, all Foundation XL cables and power cords are run through the same high voltage conditioning treatment that is used for the SRX XL. After assembled, all connections and cabling are treated with 1,000,000 volts at specific frequencies and pulse modulations.

Also included with the Foundation XL are Gold and Purple Carbon Tuning Discs that were first introduced with the Atmosphere SX cables and power cords. Based on a patented UEF (Uniform Energy Field) technology, each disc gets treated with a unique UEF compound that interacts with EM fields to improve sound quality wherever you place them in your system, and that includes both cables and other components. The conductive carbon fiber material of the disc enhances the interaction between the UEF compound and the surrounding EM fields where it is placed.

The Gold Carbon Tuning Discs are said to flesh out additional rich harmonics combined with a clarifying effect in the sound field for a more lifelike and holographic presentation. The Purple Carbon Tuning Discs get treated with a UEF compound that are claimed to enhance the clarity and extension in the soundstage even beyond the Gold. I found these Tuning Discs to be quite effective, as I experimented with them throughout my system. They gave me an endless amount of options to really fine tune the final results. I ended up using the Purple for virtually every cable connected to my Aurender N10 Music Server. It clearly added an additional amount of musicality and a sense of ease to my digital front end.

Build Quality

I want to make a very important point here about build quality. It’s might be inappropriate to talk about pride of ownership when it comes to cables and power cords, but it certainly applies here. When evaluating virtually any of the Synergistic Research products, one must clearly appreciate the physical media, the touch, and the tactile nature of all these components. The fit and finish is superbly executed with nothing less than an elite level of construction and a meticulous attention to detail. The conductor, the insulation, the shielding and even the outer jacket are all of the very best materials and execution. All connectors and contact points have that look and feel of something very special that will clearly take your music to another level. You know when you see it! You know when you hear it!

Sound

As always, the folks at Synergistic Research are big believers in utilizing a full loom of the same model for an entire system. After many years of trial and error, and mixing and matching, I have learned the hard way that this is almost always the best strategy for best sound quality. I reconfigured my entire system with Foundation XL, and then allowed it to all burn in for over a week without any critical listening. You have to be patient and prepared for a roller coaster ride, as the sound continues to evolve, but it is well worth the time and effort. My wife, however, would on occasion sneak into the listening room. Though she refused to comment, she seemed to have an interesting smile on her face throughout that week.

For my first listening session, I played my usual demonstration playlist of digital recordings. I utilized both Qobuz and my own collection of digital files on my network hard drive. Many of these tracks were at 24-bit/96 kHz and 24-bit/192 kHz, though most were at CD quality. I was highly impressed by what I was hearing. This was much more than just a subtle improvement. For most reviews, to get a rough feel for the sound quality, I typically flip through the two dozen or so tracks very quickly, and I rarely finish any one song. On this occasion, I was stuck on repeat for many of these tracks from beginning to end. I had to play several twice just to verify what I was hearing. There was indeed some fairly dramatic changes for the better. Please see some specific tracks and descriptions below.

In a nut shell, the music was now pouring through a pitch black wall of silence. This provided virtually a blank slate of noise free expression regardless of the source. This was a distinct upgrade over anything else that I have experienced in my listening room in quite some time. In retrospect, this should not have surprised me, as Synergistic Research has always attacked noise and distortion as two key variables in all of their designs. They just seem to be getting better and better at it! The Foundation XL was now establishing a new bench mark in my system that seemed to be effecting almost everything.

Yes, we had additional detail and transparency, but I was now hearing an extraordinary level of newly discovered weight and texture across all frequencies. Vocals were more three dimensional and immediate than ever. Bass had additional grunt and muscularity. Saxophones were wonderfully burnished and reedy like the real thing. On mediocre recordings, piano had less “ping” and more fleshed out inner density and presence. You talk about “air and ambiance!”  My goodness, the sound stage was so much more clearly defined, with layers and layers of both macro and micro dynamics now swirling around the listening room. I love the word “tangible.” All I can say is that for my ears and for my system, the overall presentation was tangible, tangible and more tangible! Exciting stuff!

Some Additional Back Story

I have several full looms of cable and power cords from different manufacturers that I continue to experiment with depending on my current system configuration and what components that I might be reviewing at the time. As many audiophiles have realized, synergy is critical and some components partner better with certain designs more than others. Despite what some naysayers might say, I feel strongly that wire choices can make a significant difference in sound quality.

One of my most prized purchases many years ago were the Synergistic Research CTS Element cables. We are talking several generations ago of what Synergistic Research now offers. I still have them and I still use them as needed. The technology that supported this model is still impressive as it included both Tuning Circuits/Bullets (similar in function to the Tuning Discs mentioned earlier), and Mini Power Couplers (MPC), which were individual power supplies for each cable.

My wife has had a continual running joke for many years with Andy Wiederspahn. Despite the manufacturer or updated model that we might be using or reviewing, she refused to let go of the CTS Element loom. She always insisted that the CTS Element be available, as she has consistently felt so strongly about the sound quality. She would just not let it go! Well, it might be time to permanently retire the CTS Element once and for all. She has now found a new number one! At least in my home, that says a bunch about the Foundation XL!

Music References

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris, All The Roadrunning, RSD/Universal Music (33 RPM)

Originally released on the Nonesuch label in 2006, this 2026 RSD/Universal Music reissue was a pleasant surprise. The 2006 OG was cut by Stan Ricker and has fantastic sound, but it is extremely rare as CD’s were still in their heyday at that time. The Discog’s median sale price for the OG is $297, and with a high selling price of $546. I am not a big proponent of ½ speed mastering, but Miles Showell did a wonderful job on this 2026 cut. Like myself, many fans have been waiting for years to own this album on vinyl, and we are very grateful for this reasonably priced and engaging new reissue!

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris are at their best here, and the Foundation XL really makes this recording shine like never before. Knopfler does most of the song writing, and his blend of Americana, Blues, and Country (with just a touch of Celtic), makes for a very appealing musical presentation. The track “This Is Us” is the highlight of the album for me. The vocals for both Mark and Emmylou bounce back forth with a clarity and definition that shows you why vinyl is still the king. As the saying goes, they are virtually standing right there before you! Knopfler finger picks his way through several solos via his Fender Strat with a simplicity and melodic drive has very few equals. Emmylou’s voice has never sounded so relaxed and fully saturated. Nectar of the gods! Thank you Foundation XL!

Bud Shank Holiday in Brazil. IMPEX Records (33 RPM)

I have been listening to this reissue incessantly since I brought it home from AXPONA 2026. You can see my full review by clicking here. I have been so enamored, that I have also been recommending and sharing it with many of my Audio Buds. It must be said that each and every one of them has now purchased this reissue! It’s that good! Originally released in 1959 on the Pacific Jazz label, this music can be difficult if not impossible to pigeon hole in one specific genre. I would describe it as a fascinating combination of Brazilian Samba, Hard Bop, and it even has some elements of Swing. Cut by Chris Bellman, IMPEX Records has found us another outstanding hidden gem and musical treasure!

Bud Shank on alto sax and flute, and Laurindo Almeida on acoustic guitar, are a match made in heaven. The Foundation XL brings out the best of both. For the opening track "Simpatico," Bud Shank drives forward on alto with a rhythm and energy that will totally captivate you. Laurindo Almeida more than holds her own on acoustic guitar, with an impressive series of highly engaging and expressive solos. There is no lead or supportive roles between the two, there is only a wonderful partnership in music. You rarely hear this level of inner detail and proper tone on any of these instruments. Intimate, harmonically rich, and simply gorgeous, you get it all! The Foundation XL absolutely delivers!

Radiohead, Kid A, Parlaphone (FLAC, 16 Bit/44.1 kHz)

In my humble opinion, Radiohead's Kid A is a wonderous masterpiece. The first three tracks, “Everything In Its Place”, “Kid A” and “The National Anthem” can compete with any Rock album for the finest first three tracks ever recorded. There. I’ve said it. Let the hate mail begin! Back in the day, when I heard this album for the first time on a decent high end system, we used a CD as the source. I was floored by both the sound quality and the performance! I am a vinyl guy, and I have listened to almost every Kid A vinyl pressing ever released. That includes the original 2000 Parlophone (UK 2x10" or EU 2x10") and the 2016 XL Recordings (EU). For whatever reason, that original 2000 Capital Records CD continues to be my bench mark. When streamed on Qobuz at CD quality (FLAC, 16 Bit/44.1 kHz), the sound is still at that bench mark level of excellence. Ya just never know when it comes to format!

With the Foundation XL in place, I was intrigued by what might happen next. Streaming via Qobuz, “The National Anthem” literally exploded out of the speakers with a new found level of dynamic punch and visceral excitement! More weight. More extension. More focus. Even though Kid A is somewhat of a hybrid recording, with a combination of both analog tape and digital recording techniques, there is a bunch of sampling and electronic multi-track mixing going on that can really smear if not cloud the entire experience. Even so, you could now sense an extended sound stage and layers and layers of new information for each instrument. Thom Yorke on vocals is now clearly differentiated, and thankfully unbounded from a vast wall of sound that can sometimes swallow up everything. His iconic bassline to open the track will virtually startle you with it’s thunderous drive and bite. And finally, Philip Selway on drums, cuts through the mix with an attack and suddenness that was never so apparent before. This was the track that really solidified my impressions on these cables. The Foundation XL is one sonically massive and amazingly musical design!

Final Thoughts

I congratulate Ted, Andy and the entire Synergistic Research team for another gold medal when it comes to innovation, value, and cutting edge sound performance!  Made in America and handcrafted in the Synergistic Research California factory, the Foundation XL lineup provides a level of manufacturing detail and execution, along with a pride of ownership, that can compete with if not far exceed anything at its price point. Bottom line. The Foundation XL has now jumped to the head of my nomination list for the 2026 Positive Feedback Writers Awards!

Proper Perspective And Caveats

It cannot be overstated that system synergy and personal taste are critical when evaluating high-end audio components and music. These reviews are based on my subjective listening priorities, my specific system configuration, and my specific listening room. This combination is only one data point of many that exist out there for my components and the music that is played. Please consider my comments and analysis appropriately.
