My Journey Into Audio

I heard an interesting theory last year at the California Audio Show. Basically, I was informed that women aren't audiophiles because they're not wired that way. It seems boys spend time with their fathers working on cars, taking things apart and putting them back together, and are thus programmed to be gear heads. Girls, on... Read More »

KECES Sphono and Spower

With the matching cartridges, the KECES Ephono turned out to be a real bargain: So much superb sound and substantial usage of materials plus good workmanship can hardly be found elsewhere at this price. The Sphono now also offers higher load impedances and even more features. Does it also have more to offer in terms... Read More »

German Physiks Emperor Preamplifier

At 66 pounds, it took two of us to carefully hoist the new German Physiks Emperor Preamplifier onto my rack. This is the heaviest preamp I've had since the mbl 6010D a decade ago. That was so huge I needed to get height extenders for my TAOC rack. The Emperor is not that big, just... Read More »

Self-portrait, 2017 In medias res… From time to time, I shake out my ongoing audio journal, and comment on some products and items that have accumulated over the past few months. Audiophiles as Artists - Chris Morris

Twenty questions with an audiophile who is also an artist. For this Audiophiles as Artists, we feature Chris Morris. What's your background? I grew up on a farm in eastern Colorado. No town or major population to speak of, lots of time to myself and explore the world around me. It was a very typical... Read More »

A New Reference in Electrical Power Conditioning: the ADD-Powr Sorcer X2

I've been detailing my experiences with my new home and new listening room over the last couple of years here at PF; a recent article in the last issue (HERE) chronicled my ongoing battles with a seemingly never-ending variety of sources of noise in the listening room. A room that, from the beginning, was designed... Read More »

The SVS SB-3000 Subwoofer

It seems like every conversation I've had with audiophiles about subwoofers the last few years included 3 letters: SVS. No doubt subs from this company were gaining some real respect among the high end community. When I met Nick Brown (VP Marketing) and Dan Marks and (VP Operations) from SVS at AXPONA 2019, they were... Read More »

Cardas Audio Clear Beyond XL Phono Cable: Special Order! World Premiere

The story begins with my review of the House of Cardas Clear Beyond Phono Cables back in PF Issue 102, clearly then the best ever from the genius we fondly refer to as George Cardas. They equaled or exceeded the overall performance of anything I have tried at any price, ever. I was content.  Next,... Read More »

Swedish Analog Technology (SAT) LM-12 Tonearm: Analog Playback Meets Rocket Science

The Swedish Analog Technology LM-12 Tonearm Two of the finest tonearms that I've encountered in my search for the Holy Grail hail from of all places Sweden. The first is the '90s vintage Air Tangent linear tracking, air bearing tonearm that sold for at the time an unheard of $15K (around $30K in today's dollars)... Read More »

Etsuro Gold Moving Coil Cartridge: Reference Redefined

The New Etsuro Gold Moving Coil cartridge, riding on the Kronos Helena tonearm over the Kronos Sparta Turntable I will admit to more than just a fleeting piquing of curiosity when Believe High Fidelity Owner Joshua Masongsong published a Facebook post just after the first of this year that the first Etsuro Gold MC cartridge,... Monthly Spins: June 2019

guess you could call my quest for new music an obsession. I’ve had it since I was ten and often feel transported outside of myself by certain albums. It is a never ending quest for the divine sounds. Not that I discard and forget about old records, but sometimes they embody a particular feeling, of a passage in my life so intense that the record becomes the soundtrack to that emotional space.

Sonus Faber Serafino Tradition | Review

With the Sonus Faber Serafino Tradition in your room, chances are high you will tend to let irrelevancies slide. Like food, water, and personal hygiene. Because you will have more important things to attend to. Like how unbelievably pretty these speakers are. That really is the first and last word — these loudspeakers are the best-looking that I have ever had the pleasure of seeing in my home.

Scott Walker Audio and Eight Rooms of Joy | T.H.E. Show 2019

Who is Scott Walker of Scott Walker Audio, and how can he possibly have so many exhibit rooms at one show? On Saturday at T.H.E. Show 2019, I spent the entire day covering just three Southern California dealers because they had such a strong presence–three rooms for Alma Audio, four for Sunny Components and, get this–eight rooms for Scott Walker Audio.

First Listen to the Hanze HiFi HAT Power Supply with the Thorens TD124 turntable!

The Hanze HiFi HAT turntable power supply is beautifully built, and provided meaningful but subtle improvements to my CTC Garrard 301 turntable's performance in terms of overall musicality and sonics, making everything sound and feel a little bit better, more emotionally engaging, and more like what I hear and feel from a live music listening experience.

An Experience with the Fern & Roby Montrose Turntable

I grew up listening to records. These days we call then LPs or vinyl, but I will still think of them as records. My first record player was a toy, but eventually I graduated to an all-in-one system that was a receiver with the turntable on top, and speakers attached to the sides. In those... Read More »
