06-29-2019 | By Editors at Positive Feedback | Issue 104

Concluding our video interview series from Munich 2019, courtesy of NativeDSD.com, here are the final three interviews from that event. Many thanks to Jared, Jonas, and Floor of NativeDSD for sharing this series with the readers of Positive Feedback worldwide.

Dr. David W. Robinson

Grimm Audio presents the MU1

Eelco Grimm introduces the MU1 music player that plays stereo & surround sound, "the files that you download at NativeDSD.com can go right into the MU1. One of the conveniences of having everything you need in 1 box."

Guido Tent talks about the transparency of their LS1 speakers, it connects the listener with the musicians. Guido concludes "it's a good marriage between us and Channel Classics"!

A written response upon seeing this video:

"I have been working closely with Grimm Audio for years. First using their ADC recorder to produce award-winning recordings for a good 10 years. Since two years my main studio has the LS1 multichannel setup. The transparency, depth and stereo imagery of sound has given me the tools to create master files I know are producing the best results achievable."
-- Jared Sacks is producer and recording engineer of Channel Classics & Just Listen, as well as co-founder of NativeDSD Music

The music that is playing in the background during this interview was recorded in DSD 64 by Jared Sacks with Grimm's ADC. Amsterdam Sinfonietta - The Argentinian Album available in Stereo & Multichannel DSD 64 at NativeDSD.

Amphion Loudspeakers about Quality Source Material

Amphion is a loudspeaker company based in Kuopio, Finland. Founded by Anssi Hyvönen, Amphion speakers feature a low crossover point (1600 Hz) and a waveguide to time align their speakers.

At High End Munich 2019, Anssi talks about the company's mission - which is to bring the emotion present in the pro recording and mastering room to the listener at home. To do this, you need good quality source material. This includes two-inch Analog Tape but Anssi notes that native DSD recording comes surprisingly close to Analog Tape in this regard.

He also notes that the best way to show the quality of studio monitors and loudspeakers is to do your own recordings and compare. One such recording featured singer Shanti Snyder and pianist and producer Philip Woo performing Carole King's "Up On The Roof" live to Stereo DSD 256 at a recording studio in Japan. The live performance and recording to DSD 256 were so well received that it resulted in a DSD 256 single that was a Top 5 seller in Japan and at NativeDSD Music.

Audio Writer & Reviewer Marco Cicogna talks about Multichannel and DSD

Noted Audio Writer and Reviewer Marco Cicogna talks to Native DSD about what he calls "A Journey to Classical Music" at the High End Munich 2019 audio show.

Marco feels that Multichannel brings a lot to Classical Music. He compares listening in Stereo ("you are outside the main event") and in Multichannel ("you are in the hall where the event is taking place"). "The musicians are in front of you but the sound is all around you. You feel the venue."

Marco talks with Jared Sacks from NativeDSD and Channel Classics about some of Jared's DSD recordings and how they illustrate what is possible with Classical Music in Multichannel with some sound clips. Important characteristics for the best sound include speakers and a home audio system with wide dynamics and a lot of bass. You want to capture the sound texture. Jared Sacks says he wants to feel the dynamics of the performance, as is he is sitting in the 5th row of the music hall.

Marco finishes the interview by naming 5 recordings that he recommends for the home listener.

Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4

Vivaldi: La Stravaganza

Pitch Black

Mahler: Symphony No. 3

Vivaldi: Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons)
