Troy Audio unveils the Achilles, its new ultra-high-performance loudspeakers without restrictions

Denver, CO—October 5, 2018—Troy Audio, manufacturer of ultra-high-performance loudspeakers, will unveil a new loudspeaker that promises natural, realistic sound quality previously unheard from speakers of this size. The Troy Audio Achilles will be demonstrated at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in Denver, in Suite 1110 of the Marriott Hotel.

The Achilles is a three-way loudspeaker that uses a 12" midrange-woofer with compression driver and horn in a coaxial arrangement. The system is complemented with a supertweeter. The Achilles uses only Mundorf Supreme Silver Gold Oil coils and capacitors in its crossover network. Its handcrafted cabinet is made from Russian Baltic Birch, constructed without using a single screw, thus reinforcing Troy Audio’s obsession with artisanal perfection. Stunning finishes are available in natural veneers or in high gloss colors. The Achilles enclosure measures 58" high x 16" wide x 20" deep.

"The Achilles is our reinterpretation of a loudspeaker whose performance is not compromised in order to reduce its size. We have incorporated the incredible 212 driver, developed several decades ago by Altec and now enhanced and manufactured by Great Plains Audio as the 212-8A, into a cabinet large enough to deliver an unprecedented quality of bass response," explained engineer Francisco Jileta, CEO of Troy Audio.

The midrange response produces a naturalness of sound that challenges the senses. Without colorations, it offers a realism that caresses the ears. And against all odds, the 212-8A driver can extend the high frequencies to unprecedented levels.

"The 212-8A driver is a masterpiece by engineer Bill Hanuschak and his team at Great Plains Audio (GPA), in Oklahoma,” said Jileta. Bill is the only person who could provide the entire Altec legacy—he was a key part of the original development of these great drivers." Jileta became Hanuschak’s partner in GPA in 2017.

The 212-8A driver uses a very large magnet to reproduce the high and low frequencies. This improves the reproduction of both by reducing magnetic flux interference. The high-frequency soundwaves produced by the voice coil and diaphragm are guided into an exponential throat with an exit 1.4” (36mm) in diameter and delivered through a 90° horn. This exponential throat actually passes through the center of the front voice coil. Bass is produced by a woofer 12” (305mm) in diameter and attached to this high-power voice coil.

The two separate transducer elements, mounted on a single die-cast frame, work together to approach a virtual point-source of sound. The 212-8A is one of the best two-way drivers in the world.

Engineer Jileta, a fan of horn designs, notes: "Much of the engineering involved in the development of a bass-reflex cabinet of considerable size to enhance midrange response.

The Achilles embodies the concept of "less is more." Its captivating and exuberant sound surpasses the perception of the physical space it occupies.

"In Greek mythology Achilles represents lightness and strength. In our sound conception, we couldn't have chosen a better name for this loudspeaker, which we are sure will thrill thousands of audiophiles around the world," concludes Jileta.
