They were, after all, recorded digitally. The best way to play them back today is via a digital source. Yes, they use the now obsolete recording standards from those old Soundstream machines, but I'm pretty sure that sample rate conversion would be possible today with little or no loss. Even going through a D to A to D conversion and encoding them back to 192/24 is going to give you a far more accurate rendition of the master tape than you're ever going to get on any record.
