His pure compositional skill is undisputed, but here's why I can't adopt him as my own favorite "world's greatest contemporary composer": When he "hit the wall" as a young avant-garde darling, instead of finding a way *through* the wall, he backed off, then backed up, and started writing romantic music. When young, he opened a whole new world; when "mature," he was not doing anything his predecessors did not do better.
I understand your objection to my views -- you expressed this very well in your article. I just can't get around my gut feeling on this guy.
