Actually, Jancuso, you *can* purchase the Per Madsen racks. They are now being produced by a master wood craftsman right here in Portland, Oregon.
His name is Ryan Tinsel, and you'll find more information about him in Scott Dorsey's Positive Feedback review back in Issue 94 at http://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/33-rackit-modular-record-storage-unit/. He returned to the subject again in Issue 96 at http://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/ryan-tinsel-rackit/. This article includes some additional product links. His prices for his Rack-It compatible designs are quite reasonable...about $129 per unit, IIRC. He is also producing very nice all-wood CD/SACD storage drawer systems that are stackable and integrate nicely with his LP storage modules.
We are using a number of Ryan Tinsel LP and SACD storage modules here, stacked together, and I am very pleased with them. Check the archives of our PF Facebook page to see some photos of Ryan and his racks.
You can email Ryan at [email protected], or call him at his shop: 503.335.3443. Mention Positive Feedback...thanks.
Dr. David
]]>Yes, Mark's comparison is very inferior in materials and design. It probably cannot hold the weight of 400 LPs without the wheels bending off. The booktrucks I found held between 200 and 400 lbs, with one holding 450 LPs for $300. Wax-Rax $5500 product is unique and has a high quality finish/design. Thanks to Positive-Feedback for reviewing it because it is just what I need (I have 25,000 LPs/7,000 78s) when listening by myself or with friends (pulling records off shelves here and there). I will be buying the $172 480 LP booktruck.
]]>Mark as we discussed ad nauseam on Facebook the cost is based on the boutique nature of this piece, build quality, economy of scale and the materials used. These are hand made one at time, not mass produced on an assembly line. Clearly this is an accessory best suited for those who've invested in large collections and would like to curate and better manage them. There are cartridges that cost $100 and those that top $10,000, turntables that cost $100 and those that cost $100,000, speakers for a less than a thousand dollars or those well over $500,000. Volkswagen and Porsche are both cars, they both do essentially the same thing but they're clearly different. Their materials and their costs are different, their performance is different, their production methods are different, the number produced is different and they're priced accordingly due to those differences. If the the cart you posted a link to best suits your needs thats fine then buy that one. However to slam Wax-Rax products based on price is unfair and inaccurate, you're comparing apples and oranges.
