I've been thinking about this for quite sometime, and it seems like a confluence of factors causing this decline of Hi-Fi in the public's consciousness.

That said, here's are a few interesting data points for you: approximately 78% of Head-Fi.org's traffic is under the age of 45. If we add on another 10 years, then an incredibly high 91% of Head-Fi's traffic is under the age of 55. Only 9% of Head-Fi's traffic is 55 years or greater in age. In addition, 15% of Head-Fi's traffic are women... which may not seem impressive at first glance... but remains noteworthy nonetheless.

The issue is people. And you have the wrong cockroach saying. To paraphrase Darrell Royal "they're like cockroaches, its not what they eat or haul off its what they fall in and mess up." There are a lot people considered giants in hi-fi who in reality sowed the seeds of its decline.
