NEWS RELEASE 2/23/14 PS Audio, manufacturer of fine audio equipment for over 40 years, is proud to introduce the revolutionary new DirectStream DAC.
DirectStream is the result of lead designer Ted Smith's decade-long obsession with DSD, the first in a field of one: a DAC so radical that it will show how most other DACs on the market are…well, broken. How so?
The back-story: In 1981, music was reproduced exclusively on analog-based turntables and tape decks. Although there are inherent limitations in their media, records and tape have benefitted from a century of development. Despite the very listenable music coming through those grooves, the audio world wanted more: greater dynamic range, lower noise, extended frequency response.
No wonder that when, in 1982, Sony and Philips announced they had achieved "Perfect Sound Forever", music lovers around the world waited in eager anticipation of analog's promise finally fulfilled.
The launch of the PCM-based Compact Disc would set in motion a 30-year war amongst Audiophiles, decimate the analog format, cover up subtle musical details for decades and turn the music and audio industries upside down—and not necessarily in a good way.
It might not have ever been a problem if Sony and Philips had waited another decade, and passed over the classic PCM delivery system. It turns out the processing of the CD and its higher-resolution siblings is fundamentally flawed, and has been from the beginning.
Most modern DACs are broken: music's details have been more faithfully recorded than we ever suspected, and the cover-up of those recorded details has been with us for more than 30 years. Happily, the missing musical information is still buried deep within our audio libraries—waiting to be revealed.
The problem is the PCM decoding process itself: whether a classic ladder-DAC or more modern multi-bit Sigma-Delta type, PCM processors universally mask some of the subtle cues in music, and no amount of upgrading, expenditure, tweaking or improvement can fix this fundamentally-flawed system.
In order to extract everything hidden in PCM recordings, a completely new processing method is needed.
An end to the 30-year PCM cover-up: PS Audio is proud to end the cover-up, and finally, with the revolutionary DirectStream DAC, reveal all the missing information buried within PCM-based digital recordings.
Put DSD into DirectStream, you get DSD. Put PCM into DirectStream, you get—DSD.
DirectStream converts all digital inputs, including PCM, to pure 1-bit DSD, in an elegantly-simple path. In the process, the PCM feed becomes more linear, less edgy, and never-before-heard musical details are released from all digital audio recordings. Billions of CDs and high-resolution downloads worldwide will gain new life, and be saved from obsolescence—and recycling bins or landfills.
Its secret is in its simplicity: Take a look at this comparison diagram (click to enlarge): on the top is a block diagram of one of the best PCM-based processors in the world, the ESS Sabre DAC. Look at that cluttered, circuitous path—then look at the pure simplicity of the DirectStream. The PCM processor's tendency to mask music's subtle details is largely due to its complex needs, multiple clocks, power supplies and limitations inherent in ICs.
It's not enough to just convert PCM to DSD: Converting PCM to DSD can be an easy exercise using any number of computer software programs or IC solutions. Converting PCM to DSD properly, and in such a way as to reveal missing details in the music, is a serious technical challenge.
DirectStream utilizes 66-bit fixed-point FIR filters, eliminates headroom issues common to PCM, flattens noise response in the 20-100kHz region, uses coefficients optimized for best sound rather than faster processing speed and optimizes hardware-specific operations not possible in software.
Method: Unlike other processors available today, DirectStream unifies all inputs (PCM or DSD) at 10 x DSD, then uses a true single-bit double-rate DSD core engine. True DSD core engines (compared to the standard multibit Sigma-Delta converters followed by random lower quality multibit converters) offer advantages in simplicity, linearity, and in analog-like overload characteristics that avoid PCM's "hard clipping" potential and a PCM processor's propensity to mask subtle details.
Construction: Instead of being based upon a packaged PCM-based DAC chip, with all of its inherent compromises and limitations, DirectStream utilizes an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array). An FPGA is capable of dissipating large amounts of heat, enabling intensive levels of signal-processing that are impossible to achieve with an off-the-shelf chip.
Further information of lead designer Ted Smith's seven-year journey leading to DirectStream, as well as complete details of DirectStream's design and features, download the DirectStream White Paper. Videos of Ted's discussions of his design process as well as the entire Gus Skinas interview can be found here.
PS Audio's DirectStream is a totally new approach to processing digital signals. By means of its radical architecture and construction, it is able to offer state-of-the-art digital performance and previously masked musical details from all formats, at an affordable price. DirectStream will change viewpoints regarding ultimate sound-quality while simultaneously offering greater value than any contender for state-of-the-art.
PS Audio's DirectStream isn't just another new DAC. It's a whole new process for decoding digital audio.
Release: The PS Audio's DirectStream DAC will be announced March 1, 2014. Shipments to dealers and distributors will begin in April, 2014. A limited number of units are available for review at the present time.
MSRP: Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price is $5995 in the United States. Pricing in overseas markets will vary.
Upgrades: PS Audio provides an aggressive upgrade program for all PerfectWave DAC owners to convert their existing units to the new DirectStream standard.

On the evening of March 25, the museum will host a special public event, "An Evening With Blue Note Records," featuring a Q&A with Blue Note Records President Don Was.
Blue Note Records was founded on January 6, 1939, when a German immigrant and passionate Jazz fan named Alfred Lion produced his first recording session in New York City. Blue Note has gone on to represent The Finest In Jazz, tracing the entire history of the music from Hot Jazz, Boogie Woogie, and Swing, through Bebop, Hard Bop, Post Bop, Soul Jazz, Avant-Garde, and Fusion, and into Jazz's numerous modern day incarnations under the leadership of Bruce Lundvall, who revived Blue Note in 1984, and the label's current President, Don Was, who took the helm in 2012.
GRAMMY MUSEUM EXHIBITION AND LAUNCH EVENT DETAILS
On March 25, The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles will unveil Blue Note Records: The Finest In Jazz. Located in the Mike Curb Gallery on the Museum's fourth floor, this one-of-a-kind exhibit will offer visitors an in-depth look at the legendary record label through music, album artwork, photographs, artifacts, interviews and more.
On the evening of March 25, the museum will launch the exhibit with a special public event, "An Evening With Blue Note Records," a Q&A with Blue Note President Don Was, hosted by the museum's executive director, Bob Santelli, and the curator of the exhibit, Nwaka Onwusa, in the museum's Clive Davis Theater. BLUE NOTE RECORDS 75TH ANNIVERSARY VINYL INITIATIVE
Blue Note will commence an extensive 100-album vinyl reissue initiative on March 25 with the release of five classic titles (Art Blakey Free For All, John Coltrane Blue Train, Eric Dolphy Out To Lunch, Wayne Shorter Speak No Evil, and Larry Young Unity). The vinyl releases are set to continue monthly and will also include modern classics from Blue Note's recent catalog such as Joe Lovano Quartets: Live At The Village Vanguard, Jason Moran Soundtrack To Human Motion, Terence Blanchard Flow, Medeski Martin & Wood Combustication, and Cassandra Wilson Traveling Miles. Click here for the full list of vinyl releases.
Blue Note President Don Was says, "Two years ago, we began remastering the jewels of the Blue Note catalog in hi-def resolutions of 96k and 192k. In order to develop a guiding artistic philosophy for this delicate endeavor, we donned our lab coats, ran dozens of sonic experiments and carefully referenced every generation of our reissues. Ultimately, we decided that our goal would be to protect the original intentions of the artists, producers and engineers who made these records and that, in the case of pre-digital-era albums, these intentions were best represented by the sound and feel of their first-edition vinyl releases. Working with a team of dedicated and groovy engineers, we found a sound that both captured the feel of the original records while maintaining the depth and transparency of the master tapes... the new remasters are really cool!
While these new versions will become available in digital hi-def, CD and Mastered for iTunes formats, the allure of vinyl records is WAY too potent to ignore. This year, Blue Note - along with our friends at Universal Music Enterprises - is launching a major 75th Anniversary vinyl Initiative that is dedicated to the proposition that our catalog should be readily available at a low cost, featuring high quality pressings and authentic reproductions of Blue Note's iconic packaging. Although this program begins in celebration of Blue Note's 75th Anniversary, our catalog runs so deep that we will faithfully be reissuing five albums a month for many years to come!"
On March 11, Blue Note/UMe will release a new 2CD collection of 22 stellar tracks spanning the label's history, Best of Blue Note ICON, including Sidney Bechet Quintet/"Summertime," Thelonious Monk/"'Round About Midnight," John Coltrane/"Blue Train," Sonny Clark/"Cool Struttin'," Lee Morgan/"Sidewinder," Wayne Shorter/"Speak No Evil," Norah Jones/"Cold Cold Heart," and more.
For Record Store Day in April, Blue Note will also reissue the label's first two releases as limited edition 12" vinyl: Meade "Lux" Lewis "Melancholy"/"Solitude" (BN1) and Albert Ammons "Boogie Woogie Stomp"/"Boogie Woogie Blues" (BN2). Other catalog releases, including a 75-track digital bundle spanning Blue Note's entire history, will be announced shortly.
Blue Note continues to maintain an incomparable roster of current talent, and 2014 brings new releases from Takuya Kuroda (Rising Son, February 18), Ambrose Akinmusire (the imagined savior is far easier to paint, March 11), Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band (Landmarks, April 29), as well as artists beyond Jazz such as Rosanne Cash (The River & The Thread, January 14) and Benmont Tench (You Should Be So Lucky, February 18). Additional new releases will soon be announced from Jason Moran, José James, Joe Lovano/Dave Douglas Soundprints Quintet, and two Blue Note legends: Bobby Hutcherson in a quartet with David Sanborn, Joey DeFrancesco and Billy Hart, and Wayne Shorter whose return to Blue Note, Without A Net, figured prominently in several Best of 2013 lists.
UPCOMING LIVE EVENTS
May 11 – Jason Moran, who also serves as the Artistic Advisor for Jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC will present Blue Note At 75, The Concert. As the culminating event of a celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Blue Note Records, artists from the label's present and past roster perform including Moran, Norah Jones, Wayne Shorter, and surprise special guests. Additional live events will be announced throughout the year.
BRUCE LUNDVALL'S BIOGRAPHY
Blue Note's former President and current Chairman Emeritus Bruce Lundvall – who re-launched Blue Note in 1984 and presided over the label's flourishing for over 25 years – recently released his biography Playing By Ear (written with author Dan Ouellette) through ArtistShare.
BLUE NOTE APPS
Blue Note has proved itself to be an innovator not only musically but also technologically, most notably with the 2012 release of our much-heralded Blue Note Spotify App which created a space within the popular streaming service to explore and discover music spanning the entire history of the label, as well as the Blue Note by Groovebug App which is available for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users. Now Blue Note has introduced a fun Facebook App that allows fans to insert their own face into classic Blue Note covers. Choose between six cover artwork designs by influential designer Reid Miles and see how you would look on the cover of your own Blue Note record.
It took the joining of many natural forces to create and define one of the greatest Jazz labels there has ever been: Jazz-loving German immigrants on the run from Nazism (Alfred Lion & Francis Wolff), a New Jersey optometrist moonlighting as a recording engineer (Rudy Van Gelder), a classical music-loving commercial designer (Reid Miles), and slews of the most incredible musicians that have ever walked the earth (too many to name them all here). The elements that each brought to the table—impeccable A&R instincts, elegant and insightful photography, sterling sound quality, strikingly original cover artwork, and consistently transcendent music—were all essential to the label's early success. Together they created a vivid Blue Note identity. The whole could not have existed without each of the parts.
Blue Note's legendary catalog traces the entire history of the music from Hot Jazz, Boogie Woogie, and Swing, through Bebop, Hard Bop, Post Bop, Soul Jazz, Avant-Garde, Fusion, and on. The label's stars from the early years form a true Who's Who: Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Donald Byrd, Andrew Hill, Ornette Coleman.
After a brief dormancy from 1981-1984 during which producer/historian Michael Cuscuna kept the label's legacy alive with a series of reissues on EMI, Blue Note returned reinvigorated by the leadership of Bruce Lundvall and has since established itself as the most respected Jazz label in the world. Blue Note is still home to some of the most prominent stars and cutting-edge innovators in Jazz today, and at the same time has broadened its horizons to include quality music in many genres.
Under Lundvall's stewardship, Blue Note had its share of commercial successes from Bobby McFerrin, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, Us3, Medeski Martin & Wood, Norah Jones, Al Green, Anita Baker, Amos Lee, Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis. The label also remained a haven for the most creative voices in Jazz including Ambrose Akinmusire, Patricia Barber, Brian Blade, Terence Blanchard, Don Byron, Kurt Elling, Robert Glasper, Stefon Harris, Charlie Hunter, Lionel Loueke, Joe Lovano, Jason Moran, Greg Osby, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, John Scofield, Jacky Terrasson, Chucho Valdes, and many more.
In 2011, veteran record producer and musician Don Was joined Blue Note as Chief Creative Officer and soon became President of the label with Lundvall continuing to provide guidance as Chairman Emeritus. With Was at the helm, Blue Note has renewed its dedication to Lion's original vision that "any particular style of playing which represents an authentic way of musical feeling is genuine expression." In the 21st century Lion's words still ring true and provide a blueprint that includes Robert Glasper Experiment's visionary melding of Jazz, R&B, and Hip-Hop and Elvis Costello's funky collaboration with The Roots, as well as bringing the legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter back to the label where he made his early classic albums, and continuing to sign singular voices in Jazz such as saxophonist Ravi Coltrane and vocalist Gregory Porter. Blue Note Records is one of the flagship labels of the Capitol Music Group.

NEWS RELEASE 2/11/14 Bowers & Wilkins Launches New 600 Series
The new Bowers & Wilkins 600 Series dramatically improves on the existing range's legendary combination of outstanding value and exemplary audio performance. The new 600 Series brings high-end sound quality within the reach of more people than ever before, using the cutting-edge technologies and class-leading design for which Bowers & Wilkins is renowned.
Bowers & Wilkins existing 600 Series of hi-fi and home theater speakers has won a host of awards for its mix of value and performance. Now, through the careful application of both established and all-new technologies, every element of its design has been significantly improved in the form of six new models. The resulting range – versatile, discreetly stylish and able to compete against far more expensive rivals – sets an all-new standard for affordable loudspeakers.
The new 600 Series utilizes proven Bowers & Wilkins engineering solutions from other ranges – Double Dome Tweeters derived from the CM10 speaker extend the first breakup frequency to 38kHz, Anti-Resonance Plugs for mid/bass drive units first seen in the PM-1 lowers bass distortion and improves dynamics and, of course, Bowers & Wilkins' iconic Kevlar® cones provide smooth, articulate midrange. Added to these proven technologies are new advances developed specifically for the new 600 Series, including new Dual Layer aluminum bass drivers and new tweeter decoupling technology.
The Decoupled Double Dome tweeter on its own is a major technological advance. It comprises two separate aluminum domes, the second with its center portion cut out and glued to the rear face of the first dome to create a remarkable blend of lightness and rigidity. The entire tweeter assembly is then decoupled, being physically separated from the cabinet by a cushioning gel ring in much the same way as our outboard tweeters. Harmful resonances are neither transferred from the baffle to the tweeter or the tweeter to the baffle. The resulting Decoupled Double Dome tweeter has stunning clarity and tonal purity plus outstanding imaging and dispersion. The new models sound bigger with less dynamic compression – credit much of that to the new tweeter design. We have also fitted the new design with an optimized steel mesh grille to prevent accidental or malicious damage in a decorative brushed aluminum plate with a diamond cut logo. The result is a step change in capability for affordable loudspeaker design, one that propels the new 600 Series firmly to the top of its class.
The new 600 Series is ideal not just for stereo hi-fi applications – making the most of everything from vinyl to FLAC – but also home theater. The range includes two all-new center channel speakers.
Serious speaker pairs
The 683 is the largest speaker in the new 600 Series – a floorstander designed to deliver outstanding power, accuracy and musicality. The 683 features the new Decoupled Double Dome tweeter, an FST™ midrange driver and new Dual Layer aluminum bass drivers. This new Dual Layer design sees an aluminum bass cone reinforced around its periphery with a second layer of aluminum, for a more effectively damped cone and higher break-up frequency. The result is even richer, distortion-free bass. With exceptional performance across the frequency range, the new 683 fuses serious stereo and home cinema sound with amazing value for a speaker of this caliber.
The new 684 floorstander is now slimmer than ever, yet still offers an amazing combination of serious power, clarity and unbeatable value. That's because of improved Kevlar bass/midrange drive units and the Decoupled Double Dome tweeter. 5" mid/bass drivers replace the 6.5" drivers of the current 684, affording a décor-friendly appearance, yet Bowers & Wilkins engineers have improved audio performance by using the Anti-Resonance Plugs in the drivers to deliver smoother response and lower distortion when driven hard. The 684 is also a 2-way design compared to the 2.5 way of the previous model. The smaller drivers have broader off axis response at higher frequencies, allowing the use of a simpler crossover. The result is room-filling sound without a room-filling speaker cabinet.
The versatile new 685 is at home on a stand or bookshelf. Perfectly sized for most rooms, it combines new Decoupled Double Dome tweeters, Kevlar cones and Anti-Resonance Plugs with all the value for which the 600 Series is renowned. The Decoupled Double Dome tweeter found throughout the new 600 Series builds on technology developed for the award-winning CM10. The new 685 is destined to follow in the footsteps of its highly acclaimed predecessors, the 601 and the outgoing 685, and will be recognized as THE definitive affordable compact loudspeaker – just as its predecessors were in their time.
With the new 686, small really is beautiful. At just 6.3" wide x 12.4" high x 9" deep, the 686 is the most compact speaker in the new 600 Series, but don't underestimate its power and precision. That's thanks to its new Decoupled Double Dome tweeter and improved Kevlar driver with Anti-Resonance Plug. Its main 5-inch driver features a 25mm voice coil for higher sensitivity, and it now has a front rather than rear-firing Flowport™, making it ideal for placement near a wall or in a bookshelf. The 686 features a built-in bracket for easy wall mounting but it sounds just as good on a bookshelf – or just about anywhere else.
Home theater versatility
The new 600 Series isn't just great for hi-fi; with two center speakers and in combination with our three 600 Series subwoofers, its ideal for home cinema.
HTM61 has probably seen greater change than any other in the range. The outgoing model, in an effort to minimize baffle area while still offering a full 3-way system, had only a single bass driver and an asymmetrical horizontal dispersion pattern around the upper crossover frequency. The new model takes a similar design philosophy to the CM Center 2 and has grown considerably as a result. Placing the tweeter directly above the 4" FST midrange driver guarantees a symmetrical dispersion and the extra bass driver matches the power output of the 683, with which this center speaker should be used in a home theater installation.
HTM62, the smaller of the two center speakers, carries over the twin 5" bass/midrange with central tweeter concept of the outgoing model. The cabinet height has been reduced in the same way that the 686 width has decreased, but in order to keep the same internal volume without increasing depth, the cabinet width has increased a little. However, both center speakers retain rear-facing ports in order to minimize cabinet width. The speaker may be considered as a 684 on its side, with the tweeter moved to a position between the bass/midrange drivers to guarantee a symmetrical horizontal dispersion. Typically, it would be included into any 600 Series home theatre system that did not feature the 683 at front left and right.
Bowers & Wilkins new 600 Series combines unbeatable value and best-ever performance. Vastly improving on every facet of its predecessors, the new 600 Series comfortably surpasses the outgoing range's already excellent reputation for outstanding value and exemplary audio performance.
The new 600 Series is available in a Black Ash finish only from March 2013.
The 683 is priced $1,650 per pair.
The 684 is priced $1,150 per pair.
The 685 is priced $700 per pair.
The 686 is priced $550 per pair.
The HTM61 is priced $750 each.
The HTM62 is priced $450 each.

NEWS RELEASE 2/11/14 LH Labs has begun sourcing out new hardware designs in their rapidly growing forum, Geek Force. The company, a division of Light Harmonic, maker of luxury audio components, has raised more than $1.5 million dollars with their recent crowd-funding success. "Of course raising that kind of money has great advantages when producing new products", says Gavin Fish, VP of Sales and Marketing, "but the greatest value and benefit to come out of our crowdfunding experience was creating Geek Force, a collaboration of mostly Kickstarter and Indiegogo backers who have collectively provided us with great ideas focusing on their needs in the products they want."
On Friday, January 31st, a new Headphone Stand Design contest was announced, with LH Labs devoted to building the winning design and giving the first of the manufactured product to the winner along with a $1000 cash prize. Design submissions are due by 12:00AM (PST) February 10th, 2014. LH Labs will then select five finalist designs from all of thesubmissions. Finalists will be announced by 12:00 AM (PST) on February 11th, 2014. Members of Geek Force will then vote for their favorite of the five finalist designs. Polling will close at 12:00AM (PST) on February 14th with the winner officially announced on February 15th, 2014.
The Geek Force forum has over 2000 members and was created after LH Lab's first crowdfunding project on Kickstarter for Geek Out, a thumb- drive-sized portable USB DAC (digital-to-analog converter). The campaign raised more than $300,000 and created the desire for a larger desktop version of Geek Out. "We received a lot of input from our backers, so much so that we decided to create a place for them to tell us whatthey wanted, which is how Geek Force came to life", says Fish.
The second crowdfunding campaign for LH Labs coincided with the Geek Force forum dedicating their posts to product design and specifications for Geek Pulse, a desktop DAC and headphone amp. The Indiegogo campaign raised over $1.2 million dollars. "It's clear that our second campaign would have never reached anywhere close to that million dollar mark if it wasn't for Geek Force", says Fish. "Because of the productimprovements they suggested and we committed to, our backers and Geek Force members became emotionally and financially invested in the product."
LH Labs will continue to ask the Geek Force to provide ideas and designs for new products and will create incentives like design contests and limited edition products for their members.
Geek Force is free to join, and is geared toward advanced audio and tech-performance product discussion.

NEWS RELEASE 2/11/14 Pass Laboratories, Inc., an audio innovator renowned for its unique high-performance products, has introduced the X.8 (or "Point 8") Series Amplifiers, a stunning new family of music-first audiophile components seven years in the making.
Point.8 Series amplifiers are models of electronic elegance, delivering more power, fewer stages, lower distortion and less feedback than ever before. They more accurately represent recording venues through a soundstage whose dimensionality does not change no matter the complexity of the material. In addition, the layering of orchestral instruments by Point 8 Amps allows the orchestra to seem present in the listening room, but with more space and air around the instruments, leading to a greater sensation of musical ease and flow. The bass goes very deep, while the highs extend outward without sounding edgy.
The series consists of nine Class-A amplifiers, four two-channel and five monoblock models. The two-channel amps include the X150.8, the X250.8, the X350.8 and the XA30.8. The mono models include the X600.8, the XA60.8, the XA100.8, the XA160.8 and the XA200.8. Their per-channel power ratings range from 30 for the two-channel XA30.8 to 600 for the single-channel X600.8.
Pass Labs' new amplifiers refine superb objective measurements with subjective perceptions. They represent a summation of the company's knowledge of and expertise in designing amplifiers, while elegantly expressing its philosophy of more amplifier, more progress and more music.
They also demonstrate Pass Labs' belief that the best products must be carefully adjusted until its various components operate in harmony then subjectively fine-tuned. As a result, Pass Labs subjected the Point.8 amplifiers' state-of-the-art engineering to an extensive, rigorous listening process using six different sound systems to deliver peak musical experiences.
Inspired by Pass Labs' X.5 Series amplifiers from 2006, the output stages of the larger Point.8 Series have been designed to biasmore deeply into the Class-A operating region. They feature large push-pull Class-A operating envelopes for low distortion and good loudspeaker control at ordinary listening levels.
Head of the Class-A
Pass Labs successfully increased the amplifiers' Class-A operation by employing higher power Toshiba MOSFETs (metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors) than in its earlier amps. MOSFETs are typically used to convert voltage. Those in the Point.8 Series run at a fraction of their stated specs to enhance both performance and reliability.
Pass Labs also installed many more MOSFETs than usual on most Point.8 models. The X250.8 and XA100.8 amplifiers each use 56, while the X350.8, X600.8, XA160.8 and XA200.8 models each use 72.
Pass Labs also improved the amplifiers' front ends, which house the input and voltage gain stages. Each of the nine Point.8 models has a front end uniquely molded to the specifics of its output stage so that the nine front ends vary in size, voltage, bias current, dissipation, and the distribution of single-ended vs. push-pull bias.
The improvements yield directly coupled (DC) front ends that boast very high stability, low distortion, low noise, 100-Khz open-loop bandwidths, and very high input impedances. Direct coupling in this manner maximizes the performance of each model‘s output stage, while imparting to each model its own subtle and unique sonic signature. With the Point.8 Series, Pass Labs moves beyond cookie-cutter circuits.
Power to Spare
The power supplies are also larger than those of earlier amplifiers. The X150.8, X250.8, XA30.8, XA60.8, XA100.8, X350.8 and X600.8 models have a third more storage capacitance as well as new CRC (capacitor-resistor-capacitor) filtering to round out the edges of the supply ripple.
The power supplies still use paralleled fast/soft rectifiers and very large toroidal transformers from Plitron, but the AC primary circuits now incorporate additional RF filtering. Power on/off switching and a stand-by draw are also new.
The amplifiers' front-end circuits boast massively larger power supply decoupling and low-noise shunt regulators that enable unprecedentedly more precise reference voltages for the cascode circuits. In addition, Pass Labs improved the amplifiers' output noise by more than 10 dB, and made the amplifiers much more resistant to variations in the AC power line.
The smaller Point.8 models — the X150.8, the X250.8, the XA30.8, the XA60.8 and the XA100.8 — also feature new and larger heat sinks, an upgrade that lowers distortion and dissipates the energy of the larger bias currents.
Availability and prices for the X.8 Amplifiers are still to be determined. A summary of the amplifiers' preliminary specifications follows:

NEWS RELEASE 1/4/14 Korg (Suite 30-133 / Venetian Hotel) announces the DS-DAC AudioGate USB Audio Playback system. The system consists of Korg's proprietary AudioGate 3 software, plus a choice of the DS-DAC-100 or DS-DAC-100m hardware interfaces. Both are USB digital-to-analog converters that will allow any Windows (ASIO) or Mac (Core Audio) user to play back their audio with the highest possible fidelity (DSD 2.8 MHz or 5.6 MHz). These interfaces are designed to provide enjoyment of high definition sound, whether on a home computer or on-the-go with a laptop, even in the most critical listening situations.
By using DS-DAC-100m or DS-DAC-100 (which includes both RCA and balanced XLR outputs) with Korg's AudioGate 3 – the latest version of AudioGate audio playback and audio format conversion software – users can play back their existing audio from CDs, downloads or other sources, as high-quality DSD audio on their computer or laptop, resulting in audio playback that sounds better than before.
The benefit of audio conversion via AudioGate software is a purer end result: experiencing the audio as it was originally intended. The audio passes through without the hardware filtering or modulation present in other available D/A converters, thereby eliminating potential noise and distortion. Audio files will sound better because the converted, pure DSD stream bypasses potentially damaging processes in the audio path.
In addition to a 1/4" stereo headphone output, the stylish DS-DAC-100 provides convenient XLR and gold-plated RCA outputs for connecting to devices like power amplifiers. The DS-DAC-100m's streamlined design and familiar 1/4" stereo headphone output will make a perfect point of entry for those new to DSD audio.
Both the DS-DAC-100 and DS-DAC-100m support ASIO, WDM (Direct Sound, WASAPI) and Core Audio drivers. Installing the Korg USB Audio Device Driver will allow native 1-bit DSD playback on either Mac or PC. Supported audio input sample rates range from 44.1 to 192 kHz for PCM; both 2.8224 MHz and 5.6448 MHz are supported in the 1-bit DSD realm.
DS-DAC-100 and DS-DAC-100m users can download AudioGate 3 software from korg.com at no charge. A free lite version of the software will also be available for customers who are just getting started listening to DSD.
The Korg DS-DAC-100 & DS-DAC-100m will be available in spring 2014 for U.S. Street prices of $599.99 and $349.99 respectively.

NEWS RELEASE 1/4/14 Leading digital audio manufacturer Antelope Audio[CES: Venetian, suite 29-227] introduces its new Zodiac Platinum DSD DAC/headphone amplifier during the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The Zodiac Platinum, features a unique 256X upsampling mode where DSD64 and DSD128 are upsampled to DSD256, thereby releasing the true potential of DSD – delivering new standards in accuracy, transparency, imaging, and dynamics. The new DSD DAC ships with an entirely new, second-generation Voltikus power supply and an elegant aluminum remote control.
In addition to having a strong presence in the consumer audiophile market, Antelope Audio is highly regarded in the professional audio community as the world's leading manufacturer of digital clocking devices and AD/DA converters. The company's equipment can be found in top commercial facilities around the world and is routinely used by the industry's most accomplished recording, mixing, mastering and live sound audio engineers. The new Zodiac Platinum DAC draws on this combined expertise, providing the most comprehensive, top-end DSD and PCM sample rate support and uncompromising audiophile quality.
Zodiac Platinum: The Revolutionary Difference is in the Details
With the Zodiac Platinum, it is possible for the listener to discern each tiny detail presented in the original recording. This is because its innovative PCM and DSD upsampling capability enables the device to reconstruct a more natural-sounding waveform than other standard upsampling methods allow. Such a premium result is achieved through a proprietary 64-bt algorithm, developed by Antelope Audio CEO, Igor Levin, adding precisely the right samples in their most natural placement.
"We have created an algorithm that we believe is the best sounding and most authentic in reconstructing the wave using the DSD," says Levin. "And the precision with which we are carrying this out is three times higher than what is typically done on the DAC chip. It is a more accurate calculation, and this is what makes the difference when you are computing the missing points."
"Even in cases where the original material was not recorded at higher rates, we can still use the same mathematics that we use in the upsampling with the PCM in order to produce higher sample rate DSD - and that is going to make a big difference when the DSD is reconstructed," he added. "So in a way, I would go so far as to say that we've created the best DSD that's ever been built by improving it through this upsampling process."
Zodiac Platinum: The Perfect Digital Hub
In addition to the custom-built USB chip capable of carrying DSD128 and up 24-bit, 384 kHz PCM files, the Zodiac Platinum boasts a wide range of connectivity options, including AES/EBU and S/PDIF I/O, a couple of TOSLINK inputs (PCM only), a set of balanced and unbalanced analog outs, as well as an unbalanced RCA input. All this makes it a corner stone for any home entertainment setup, allowing seamless connectivity to any computer, streamer, gaming console or TV screen and providing the highest level of audio reproduction performance and enjoyment.
The Platinum is complimented with two audiophile grade headphone outputs fed by dual-stage drivers and controlled by a precision stepped relay attenuator, coming as a welcome addition to those that prefer to be immersed in a more intimate high-end audio appreciation.
Zodiac Platinum: The Ultimate Clocking
Finally, the device features Antelope's renowned 64-bit Acoustically Focused Clocking and is also equipped with a 10MHz input for Antelope's 10M Rubidium atomic clock — which delivers the most accurate, stable clocking reference available, bringing the ultimate imaging and 3D dimensionality. Superior stereo placement on the Zodiac Platinum is enhanced by the Quad-DAC architecture, procesing the left and the right channel conversion in two separate DAC chips. This technology affects the signal to noise ratio while improving stereo separation and overall linearity.
The Zodiac Platinum, which ships with Voltikus power supply, is priced at US $5,500 and is already available globally. For more information and product specifications, please visit the Antelope Audio website.

The master clock is complemented with dual differential independent Burr-Brown PCM1794A DACs for left and right channels to achieve exceptional accuracy in conversion and a high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio.
In addition, a proprietary discrete IV conversion circuit is utilized to reduce residual noise effectively even at the highest sample rates and also provide a high slew rate resulting in music with excellent transient response with high definition and impact.
Proprietary Asynchronous USB Transmission Engine
To handle a variety of high resolution formats, both models feature five digital inputs (USB, XLR, optical, and 2 x coaxial). The USB Audio Class 2.0-compatible USB port is equipped with a specially-developed asynchronous USB transmission engine capable of handling PCM audio data of up to 384 kHz/32 bit, and DSD audio data up to 5.6 MHz. As received digital signals are read out with the high-purity clock, the digital signal boasts incredibly high precision and reduced jitter.
Aluminum Chassis and Structure
For an unmatched modern and stylish look combined with the best feel and advanced functionality, both TAD models are constructed of an eight millimeter thick pure aluminum chassis and a structure with a low center of gravity that places heavier components in the lower portion to minimize the effects of external vibrations. For precise disc rotation and highest operational stability, the TAD-D1000 SACD/CD player utilizes a TAD custom built machined aluminum disc tray and low-noise brushless DC servo that is firmly mounted to the chassis.
Toroidal Power Supply
Both units are integrated with a proprietary high-output, large-sized toroidal power supply to ensure extremely fast response and exceptional audio output even at high volume levels.
TAD-DA1000 Volume Function
The TAD-DA1000 is equipped with a line output volume function for simple high sound quality setup and direct connection to an external power amplifier. In addition, the unit also offers a headphone amplifier with a dedicated independent volume control and can be used directly with headphones with impedances ranging from eight to 600 Ohms.
The TAD-D1000 disc player and TAD-DA1000 D/A converter are currently available for purchase. For further information, please contact an authorized TAD distributor or retailer or visit www.tad-labs.com.
NEWS RELEASE 1/4/14 SVS, a worldwide leader in high performance home audio products, unleashes two subwoofers with completely re-designed drivers specifically engineered to handle the punishing power of SVS' new Sledge STA-500D amplifier with DSP controls. At $699 and $799 respectively, the SB-2000 and PB-2000's combination of power, processing, and innovative driver design redefine subwoofer performance at their price points.
At the heart of each SVS subwoofer is a newly engineered 12" 2000-series driver. Nearly 20 generations of driver prototypes were built by hand and punished with rigorous real-world testing; including 100-hours of full power testing; before the final version was approved for production. Extensive prototyping allowed SVS to engineer a driver capable of outclassing those in subwoofers costing two and three times as much as the 2000 Series.
The drivers consist of dual high-grade ferrite magnets and an FEA-optimized motor for nearly distortion-free performance. A reinforced Nomex spider was integrated for improved linearity and driver control, especially important when the STA-500D amp is pushing the subwoofers to maximum output levels. To ensure the SB-2000 and PB-2000 play their best long into the future, the driver also features a durable low-creep rubber long-throw surround and integrated tinsel leads to eliminate tinsel slap and improve reliability.
Gary Yacoubian, SVS President, observes, "We are especially proud of this driver, as it is the product of exhaustive design and an incredible number of prototype iterations. The goal was to design a driver that could fully leverage the crushing power of our new amplifier, and change the game at this price point. It took us many months, but we nailed it "
The aforementioned Sledge STA-500D DSP amplifier is incredibly powerful and flexible considering it comes in a subwoofer costing less than $800. Conservatively rated at 500 watts RMS continuous and 1100 watts peak dynamic, the amp has brains to match its brawn. A sophisticated DSP in the amplifier includes an array of filters and volume, gain, and phase controls for fine-tuning performance. A frequency-dependent limiter/compressor algorithm with adjustable attack/release and compression parameters offers the ultimate in refined behavior at the drive limits of the subwoofer system. The DSP amplifier is effortless in its delivery of all this power, yet it consumes less than half-a-watt in stand-by mode.
"500 watts of amplification, a painstakingly optimized driver, and a sophisticated DSP engine in a $700 subwoofer is simply unheard of, which is exactly how we like to do things at SVS," said Gary Yacoubian. "The PB-2000 and SB-2000 integrate our best technology, engineering and design elements and hit a pricing sweet spot that will make them extremely appealing to audio and home theater enthusiasts."
Both 2000 Series subwoofers feature comprehensive
and flexible connectivity options for easy set-up and integration into any home
theater or stereo system. The SB-2000 is available now for an MSRP of $699, the
PB-2000 is also shipping with an MSRP of $799.

Zanden Audio Systems has introduced a new solid state phonostage: the model 120. Based on Zanden's award winning 1200 series of phonostages, it maintains the essence of their reference products: an LCR type circuit in the equalization section and selectable equalization. The model 120 offers nearly the same sound quality of its more exalted brethren at a much more attainable price point.
The phonostage is the heart of analog music reproduction, and the model 120 retains Zanden's core principals. All phonostages must perform equalization. However, Zanden's model 120 phonostage is not limited to just the traditional RIAA equalization, but also incorporates (4) additional equalization circuits so all stereo LP records can be played with the utmost fidelity and accuracy. The (4) additional equalization curves are Decca, Columbia, Teldec and EMI. All of these additional equalization standards were developed by major record labels and used extensively during the golden age of vinyl. Proper equalization is essential to preserving the time coherence of the musical signal, which is the foundation for high fidelity music playback.
The model 120 uses an LCR type passive circuit design, considered the best, in the equalization section. The advantage of the LCR circuit is quite simple. As far as the musical signal is concerned, it is nothing more than a straight wire. Impedance does not vary with frequency. Therefore, there are no micro-level fluctuations in amplitude. Two loading positions are available to provide the greatest compatibility with a wide range of cartridges. For this function Zanden has chosen top quality step-up transformers manufactured by Jensen, one of the most storied manufactures in audio. An outboard power supply prevents contamination of the musical signal by mechanical noise from the power transformer. A number of unique noise absorption and shielding techniques are used throughout the design, including Asahi-Kasei Fibers Corporation's Pulshut RF noise absorption material.
Zanden Audio Systems, Ltd., is a privately held company based in Osaka, Japan. It was established in 1990 by Kazutoshi Yamada for the purpose of closing the gap between live music and recorded music which he became keenly aware of as a concert coordinator for over 500 live events. Zanden is both a manufacturer of hi-end audio equipment and continues to be active in the recording of live music. Over the years their products have received numerous awards and wide acclaim for their sonic virtues. They are distributed in over 15 countries with many more local dealers. The model 120 will be demonstrated at CES 2014 from January 7th to 10th in the Venetian Suite 30-211 and is currently available for sale worldwide. Please contact your local distributor for pricing.

NEWS RELEASE 1/1/14 High-performance manufacturer MIT Cables, announces the availability of a broad line of new power conditioning products. Known for nearly 30 years for its top of the line Reference audio cable products featuring outboard passive parallel networks to optimize poles of articulation and efficiency of power transfer, MIT is also well-known for its patented AC Filterpole technology. Today MIT is launching the first of a new range of Z-Power AC filtration products, building on the successful past products with even better performance and a more extensive selection.
MIT's Z-Series power filtration products use patented parallel AC Filterpoles, which are tuned networks which actually eliminate reflected noise by efficiently absorbing all forms of AC noise, and convert it to harmless thermal heat. This is done by creating a very low impedance across the load at a variety of frequencies corresponding to sources of unwanted noise. This removes everything but the actual power line frequency, and is a patented technology.
The result? Once the Z-Power circuitry protects an AV system, you will instantly enjoy "blacker" blacks, better color saturation, and increased shadow detail; movie sound tracks will deliver more articulate dialog, Foley sounds, and background music with theater-like quality. Because your audio system has a lower noise floor, you will enjoy pinpoint audio image placement within a lifelike soundstage, with smoother highs and deeper bass response.
Power Factor Correction, another MIT patented technology as it relates to audio equipment, ensures that all of the energy supplied by the mains is consumed by the load, and none is reflected back to the source. By correcting the Power Factor, many MIT ZSeries products ensure that your noise floor is even lower, and that you will use less power for the same work, prolong the lifespan of your components, and not limit the current toyour system for best performance.
The new Z-Power series will feature three product categories. First products are:
SL Z-Cord 3fp (starting at $349/2M cord) is a high-quality IEC power cord with an integral AC noise trap using three FilterPoles. These filters are optimized to trap and remove the RFI interference so prevalent because of all the digital equipment being used today.
SL Matrix Z-Cord 6fp (starting at $699/2M cord) steps up to a 14AWG construction capable of handling 15-amp currents, so is suitable for larger power amplifiers and other components with higher current draw. Its noise trap uses six FilterPoles and Power Factor Correction, adding extra filters designed to clean up specific AC line noise harmonics, as well as reaching into the video frequency range.
SL Z-Plug 3 ($199) is a very basic plug-in module, with three FilterPoles in a housing with an AC plug on the back. Simply plug it into any outlet or AC strip/surge protector being used to power an AV system or any office electronics, and it will instantly clean up the RFI interference and improve the performance of your equipment. No installation needed, no calculations, just plug it in and enjoy the results.
SL Z-Plug 6 ($349) is a larger version of the Z-Plug 3, housing six FilterPoles and Power Factor Correction for broader power conditioning in the same way as described above with the power cords.
Free-Standing Power Conditioners
SL Z-Pod ($699) is the first in a new line of free-standing power conditioners, designed to improve the sound and picture of the very best AV systems. The Z-Pod is a basic module with two high-current outlets, a resettable fuse, and an IEC power inlet. Like all Z-Power products, it utilizes our patented parallel AC FilterPoles, in this case six for broad noise reduction capability. It also has a greater degree of Power Factor Correction than in the power cords and plug-in modules for even better performance.
Please visit www.mitcables,com for further details on these and our other fine products, and look for a series of videos explaining the technologies. All Z-Power versions are engineered and built in the US, carry a limited one-year warranty, and are available for immediate shipment from MIT Cables' Rocklin, California factory.

NEWS RELEASE 11/23/13 Randall K Designer HiFi was started a little under a year ago with one mission, to make audio cool again and get people passionate about wanting to share music and audio the very same way it was infused in us. To do this, we are building limited edition functional audio art that at the very least are conversation pieces, and, perform at state of the art levels. We feel that for too long, people would purchase a piece of equipment to hide it in their audio cave. The only way the audio business will drive groups of music lovers towards finer equipment and enjoy listening is to make audio an inclusive sport and not an exclusive one, as well as offering unique, high performance products.
Each hand made pair of Randall K speakers are limited editions to insure exclusivity and value. Randall K speakers can be custom tailored in both color and material utilized to add another level of personalization. We want our clients to be an integral part of the process and to take pride in owning a Randall K loudspeaker.
Multiple steps with industry leading technology and craftsmanship are employed to assure that performance is commensurate with the aesthetics. Randall K designs mate wide band drivers with a midbass/bass driver to achieve the coherency of a single driver loudspeaker, along with the output and dynamics of a multiway. Our designs allow coherence, musicality and timing to be taken to a previously unattainable level. Resonance and internal timing errors are addressed using our AIR technology (Asynchronous Internal Randomization) for ultimate musical reproduction. The shapes and contours of Randall K cabinets are chosen to minimize internal reflections and minimize all of the non-desirable restrictions that putting a speaker into a box causes.
We are currently looking for 10-15 Dealers in the US and 10 -15 International Distributors that would like to offer the Randall K designs exclusively, people who want to bring excitement back into our industry and attract much needed new blood into our beloved sport. Our speakers truly will separate you from your competitors as something you can't wait to show off from a sonic and aesthetic perspective.
If you are one of those Dealers that truly cares about music and desires to make listening to music fun and cool again, as well as growing your business, please contact me at;
NEWS RELEASE 11/23/13 Bryston, LTD (www.bryston.com) has announced the introduction of the BUC-1, a special purpose digital to digital converter that enables music enthusiasts to use their computer as a high resolution music source even though their existing Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) does not feature asynchronous USB capability. The Bryston BUC-1 converter allows for native 24 bit resolution at sampling rates up to 192 kHz. MSRP for the BUC-1 is $799. Available January 1st, 2014.
The BUC-1 takes a standard USB output from the computer and delivers bit-perfect data via either an AES/EBU or S/PDIF output to any DAC. "The concept behind this product is to serve a very specific niche in the marketplace," explained Bryston's James Tanner. "There are digital music enthusiasts out there who would like to use their computer as a high resolution music server and yet extend their investment in a previously purchased DAC that does not feature asynchronous USB. The BUC-1 is that critical link between older hardware and the latest high resolution music software," Tanner explained.
The BUC-1 differentiates itself from competitive USB solutions in several critical ways including a robust linear power supply design. This is not a device that is buss-powered via the USB cable. In order to supply clean power to the on-board circuitry, the BUC-1 uses a combination of power supply filtering and a newly engineered power down-regulator. Like other Bryston electronics, the power supply features ultra stable voltage regulation, extremely low noise/low distortion circuitry throughout and a steel chassis to reject any radiated noise from a computer or other device in close proximity. The goal of any quality USB converter is to convey the exact bits in the audio signal with the least amount of jitter possible. While most USB converters are capable of delivering correct bits, accurate timing is another matter. Timing errors in the signal can come from a number of different sources, such as noisy power supplies or clocks, timing errors already present on the audio signal being encoded, and noise in the transmission line, just to name a few. Most crucially, the Bryston BUC-1 takes control of the master timing of the audio system—so rather than the computer running the master clock with questionable results, the BUC-1 becomes the main system clock delivering ultra low jitter, sparkling high resolution audio to any outboard DAC. "The BUC-1 is ideal for anyone who wants the benefits of computer-based high resolution audio playback using an existing DAC," Tanner concluded.
NEWS RELEASE 11/23/13 Lone Mountain Audio, the U.S. distributor for ATC, Acoustic Transducer Company Consumer Hi-Fi products announces ATCs new Hi-Fi Passive SCM19 V2 Loudspeakers designed for medium size stereo and multi-channel applications.
The new Hi-Fi Passive closed-box SCM19 employs ATCs new SH25-76, 25mm soft dome tweeter, updated bass/mid drivers and crossovers housed in a new curved laminated cabinet. The second generation SCM19 employs ATCs landmark SH25-76 tweeter, developed to satisfy the companys long-established rigor in drive unit engineering.
ATCs SH25-76 Tweeter
Sharing technology with the renowned ATC soft domed mid-range drive unit, the new tweeter employs a unique dual suspension system suppressing rocking modes even at high power output levels. The configuration of a short edge-wound voice coil in a long, narrow magnetic gap ensures exceptionally low distortion throughout its operating band and removes the need for Ferro-fluids, which can dry out over time, compromising performance.
A complex, shaped, soft-domed diaphragm extends high frequency range and offers a smooth off-axis response. The tweeters 15,000 gauss (1.5 tesla) neodymium magnet has a black heat-treated top plate, which dissipates heat away from the voice coil to maintain high power handling and low power compression. A precision-machined 5.5mm rigid alloy waveguide provides optimum dispersion, a flat on-axis frequency response and resonance-free operation.
New Cabinets and Systems
Establishing what is to be a new style for ATCs most
competitively priced range of loudspeakers, and joining their new SCM7 V3 and
SCM11 V2 recently announced, the new SCM19 benefit acoustically and
aesthetically from a curved cabinet construction. The new cabinet design is
braced and laminated for high rigidity and damping, the curved enclosures in
real cherry or black ash veneer also impart a strong impression of handcrafted
design quality. The systems improved crossovers feature metallized polypropylene
capacitors, large air cored inductors and ceramic wire-round resistors offer
superior power handling and clarity. The new model exhibits an impedance curve
free from low values, presenting an easy load for amplifiers of 75 to 300 watts.
Second Generation SCM19
The new ATC SH25-76 soft dome tweeter is joined with the companys highly linear 150mm mid/bass driver. It features an integrated 75mm soft dome exceptional for its horizontal dispersion of mid-band frequencies and a huge 9kg high-energy, Super Linear magnet systems, which includes a 75mm diameter flat wire, under hung voice coil, meticulously milled and formed by ATC. The magnet system and a carefully weighted doped fabric cone assembly contribute to the SCM19s wide bandwidth, impressive dynamic range and convincing bass output coupled with very low distortion as a result of the unique Super Linear motor system.
The new range of ATC closed-box passive loudspeakers is certain to raise the bar in performance driven bookshelf loudspeakers. Manufactured in-house, the new SCM19 offer the ownership of a hand-built ruggedly engineered speaker, world famous for musical accuracy and high power output, and are backed by ATCs six-year warranty.

NEWS RELEASE 11/13/13 Light Harmonic, maker of state-of-the-art digital audio products, has responded to an unprecedented degree to input from backers of their current Indiegogo campaign for "Geek Pulse", a desktop DAC and headphone amplifier which can form the basis of a home audio system.
"After our Kickstarter campaign for 'Geek Out', we said that the biggest benefit of the campaign was the input from our backers," said Gavin Fish, Light Harmonic VP of Sales. " With 'Geek Pulse' we're showing just how important that input is to us, by allowing our backers to define key product features and even lead us into whole new products."
Since the campaign for "Pulse" was launched on October 28th, Larry Ho and the Light Harmonic design team have changed a number of key features of Pulse including the
front panel, its display, the type of volume control, inputs and outputs, and most recently, added optional Bluetooth connectivity with the addition of "Geek Blue".
"Our backers have given a lot of thought to what they want in a desktop system," said Larry Ho, CEO of Light Harmonic. "Their ideas have helped us clarify what features we should have in Pulse. They've shown us that there is significant demand for some features we didn't think were important-- like Bluetooth".
Bluetooth compatibility is usually considered a limiting factor in high-resolution audio, but by utilizing the aptX codec, the technology behind HD radio, in association with Light Harmonic's patent-pending three layer buffer to reduce the noise ('jitter") inherent in wireless transmission, wireless streaming sounds better than ever before.
"It's true that aptX is still a compressed format," said Ho, " but by combining Bluetooth 4.0 with our buffer and quiet power circuit, Pulse will be the best-sounding Bluetooth component made, and one of the easiest to use."
Additional features for Pulse will appear in the weeks to come. "We've said from the beginning that we want Pulse to be the basis of a home audio system, " said Fish. "Use your imagination-- we expect we'll provide features everyone wants, as well as some unexpected ones. This is just the beginning."
The Indiegogo campaign for Geek Pulse went live on October 28, 2013, and will run through December 20, 2013. Presently, over 1000 backers have pledged more than $250,000 in support of Pulse.
Since its inception in 2008, Indiegogo has raised millions of dollars for thousands of projects. Initially geared to the independent film industry, the site expanded in 2009 to include all industries and types of fundraising projects
"We want the 'Geek' products from our LH Labs division to become known as the products that customers dream of-- but can't believe anyone will make," said Ho.
Suggested Retail Price, "Geek Pulse": $499.00 Geek Blue: $249.00 additional.
Availability: April, 2014
Light Harmonic was founded in Sacramento, California in 2010 with the goal of producing the finest-sounding digital audio products in the world. The company produces the industry-leading Da Vinci DAC ($20,000), Da Vinci Dual DAC ($31,000) and the LightSpeed USB cable ($999-$1999). All three products have received rave reviews and are sold worldwide through a network of specialist dealers and distributors. "Geek Out" was the first product developed for Light Harmonic's mass-market subdivision, LH Labs; "Geek Pulse" is the second.
NEWS RELEASE 11/13/13 Audience today announced that it is now shipping its ClairAudient 1+1 loudspeaker. The ClairAudient 1+1 is a bi-pole (front- and rear-radiating) design that is compact, yet provides surprisingly expansive sound.
Recipient of Greatest Bargain and Best Sound (highest value) accolades at T.H.E. Show: Newport 2012 from The Absolute Sound when presented as a pre-release prototype, the ClairAudient 1+1 utilizes two of Audience's proprietary A3-S full-range drivers, one in the front and one rear along with two side-firing passive radiators in a crossoverless design, a configuration that yields exceptionally coherent and musically natural performance. The 1+1 is striking in appearance, with a high gloss black multi-angled enclosure accented by rosewood sides.
The Audience proprietary A3-S driver, although just 3 inches in diameter, delivers extremely flat frequency response from 50Hz to 22kHz (depending on room placement), eliminating the need for a separate woofer, midrange driver, tweeter, and crossover network. As a result the inherent problems of integrating multiple sonically dissimilar drivers and the accompanying phase distortions, loss of resolution and transient response degradation of a crossover network are completely avoided. The dual side-mounted passive radiators augment the output of the A-3S drivers and enable the 1+1 to deliver outstanding presence and dynamic contrast.
"By employing our A-3S driver in a bi-pole design with dual passive radiators, the 1+1 is able to provide an expanded soundstage, extended low-frequency response and offer increased power handling," said John McDonald, president of Audience. "Most importantly, the 1+1 attains a level of sonic purity and musical accuracy that removes all obstacles between the loudspeaker, the listener and the performance."
The 1+1 also utilizes Audience's unique SSIT SweetSpace TM Imaging Technology that provides an expanded listening area rather than the usual single listener sweet spot.
The A3-S driver features a large patented neodymium-magnet motor structure and voice coil that moves with a highly linear excursion. It utilizes an exclusive rigid lightweight anodized aluminum-magnesium alloy cone material with a curvilinear shape. The driver's concave dust cap is made of a proprietary material that is specially designed to control high-frequency cone breakup and provide optimum dispersion.
The patent-pending A3-S surround has a unique "S" shape that allows the driver to provide large excursions without impacting the movement of the cone, enabling the driver to behave more like an ideal pistonic (back and forth) radiator. The driver's patent-pending basket (frame) provides rigid support and eliminates sonically degrading resonances. Other refinements include large pole-piece vents for efficient heat dissipation, a spider (the circular piece that holds the driver's voice coil in place) that allows unrestricted cone movement and many additional enhancements.
The loudspeaker is built using the highest-quality components including the company's custom-made mono crystal Auric internal wiring. Like all Audience audio components and loudspeakers the ClairAudient 1+1 is designed, engineered and handcrafted in the United States.
The Audience ClairAudient 1+1 loudspeaker is currently available at a suggested retail price of $1,800 per pair.

NEWS RELEASE 11/1/13 Pass Laboratories, Inc., an audio innovator renowned for its unique high-performance products, has announced it is beginning shipments this month of its Xs Preamplifier, designed by Wayne Colburn, and the new flagship of its preamplifier line. The Xs Preamp is entirely new and designed to complement the ultimate performance standards of Pass Labs' new and highly regarded, dual-chassis Xs-300 and Xs-150 Amplifiers.
Custom designed for the ultimate in music listening, the Xs Preamp opens up the soundstage, delivers a greater sense of space and layering, and provides a clearer window into the performance of reproduced music. It achieves a frequency response of -3dB at 2 Hz and 60 kHz, and a signal-to-noise ratio of -110 dB. Equally important, it applies numerous lessons Pass Labs learned designing its breakthrough XP-30 3-Chassis Reference Preamplifier, and the two Xs Series Amplifiers.
The Xs Preamp is quieter than the XP-30 and has an even more improved power supply. In appearance, it resembles the Xs Amplifiers and features two large chassis built with a true dual-monaural topology. Internally, it has been innovatively designed, especially in its use of high-quality materials.
Pass Labs fabricated its circuit boards from materials sourced in many cases from the military and high-speed computer sectors for their superior performance. Pass Labs also optimized each circuit board through an arduous trial-and-error listening process designed to obtain top performance in each functional area for which a board is employed. For example, circuit boards for power supply circuits have different requirements than ones for gain stages. In the Xs Preamp, each board is optimized for its specific use.
Each of the Xs Preamp's two channels has its own power supply board, both featuring an optimized circuit design and layout. The boards' 100,000-microfarad (uF) capacitors are optimized for low noise and high performance through the use of a variety of materials, from highly reliable electrolytics to a custom polypropylene. Innovatively utilizing newly available silicon carbide semiconductors further heighten performance by dropping noise below the level of Pass Labs own remarkable XP-30 Preamp.
The circuit boards for the gain stages have been completely redesigned for maximum sonic impact. They employ a direct-coupled (DC), ultra-symmetric gain path with high-bias Class-A circuitry, and feature auto bias and DC-compensation to maintain peak performance. An extra large, high-definition display addresses listeners' desire to know a music system's status even from across a brightly lit room. The 20-character display is easy to read, turn on or off and dim. The Xs Preamp comes supplied with a remote control. Its rear panel includes six single-ended, balanced inputs, including a pass-through, a tape loop, and dual-power input connections. It also provides two fixed and one variable output, both of which are single-ended, balanced and suitable for bi-amping. The preamp's two chassis weigh a total of 80 pounds, with each chassis measuring 19 inches wide by 14 inches deep by 6.25 inches high.
The Xs Preamplifier will be available this month from authorized Pass Labs dealers at a suggested price of $38,000 (MSRP).

NEWS RELEASE 10/15/13 Merus Audio launches amplifier chip with 90 percent reduction of energy consumption at "Sound of Denmark" in Silicon Valley
At Innovation Center Denmark's Sound of Denmark campaign in Silicon Valley, Merus Audio will present a groundbreaking new technology that drastically reduces energy loss in consumer electronics
After several years of intense product development, Merus Audio is now ready to launch a new amplifier chip to the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics. The ultra-efficient and compact chip will primarily address the Home Audio segment, but the technology will also extend the battery life of portable devices like cell phones.
CEO of Merus Audio, Hans Hasselby-Andersen, will present and demo the amplifier chip MA12070 on October 22 at Sound of Denmark's panel event open to the public. (info below)
"The demo will mark the important transition from concept to a product ready for customer sampling," says Hasselby-Andersen, who will use the demo to compare the amplifier chip's performance with competing technologies in what marks the company's first public product presentation.
Sound of Denmark is a delegation of Danish audio professionals organized by Innovation Center Denmark in Silicon Valley and Danish Sound, an innovation network representing more than 180 Danish audio companies as well as research communities within the sound domain.
From October 21-24, Sound of Denmark brings the best of Danish audio technology and knowledge to Silicon Valley to explore and foster new relationships, business opportunities, and R&D collaborations. This happens through networking events, workshops and site visits to local audio giants such as Sennheiser and Dolby.
The Danish audio industry is disproportionate to the
size of Denmark with Danish hearing aids making up close to 50 percent of global
production. Executive Director of Innovation Center
Denmark, Camilla Rygaard-Hjalsted recognizes how this pioneering achievement has
spurred related Danish research in the field of acoustics:
The average yearly growth of the Danish audio
sector, from 2005 through the recession to 2012, was at a robust eight percent.
Director of Danish Sound, Jan Larsen, sees a huge opportunity in introducing
Danish audio knowhow to the global arena:
One such niche product is made by Ortofon. The Danish company will showcase a prototype of a new bone conductor that interprets sound by producing vibrations transmitted through the skull to the inner ear where it is perceived as sound. This technology aids those with hearing loss while also benefitting professionals in the security, fire prevention, and law enforcement sectors that need to communicate clearly while keeping the ear unobstructed to surrounding sound.
CTO at Ortofon, Leif Johannsen, sees Sound of Denmark as a unique opportunity to meet developers of future audio products:
"We believe that the quality of Ortofon bone conductors as compared to traditional bone conductors opens up a new world of applications. We need to create the right networks in order to make this happen and this is where Sound of Denmark plays a crucial role," says Johannsen who looks forward to demoing the bone conductor solution at the showcase event October 22.
The bone conductor is one of the audio products Silicon Valley is tuning into at the moment—especially since Google launched the Google Glass prototype featuring the technology.

NEWS RELEASE 10/12/13 The AHB2 stereo power amplifier introduces groundbreaking advances in power amplifier design and performance. Its entirely new patented technology eliminates most sources of distortion while extending the dynamic range well beyond that of most high-end amplifiers. High-resolution audio recordings are now available in a variety of digital formats, but none of these formats can be experienced to their full potential using a typical power amplifier. Only the AHB2 power amplifier is designed to deliver the details, texture, and dynamic range of the finest best high-resolution recordings.
According to John Siau, Director of Engineering at Benchmark, "the AHB2 is a truly groundbreaking product. It represents a totally unconventional approach to some well-known problems in high resolution audio."
Siau went on to say that, "recent advances in high-resolution digital formats have well outpaced most existing amplifier technologies. It is now possible to produce and distribute recordings that have dynamic ranges that exceed 120 to 125dB. However, it is hard to find a power amplifier that can deliver more than 100 to 105dB of dynamic range. The AHB2 is the last piece of the chain in delivering high resolution audio."
Most of the advantages of the high-resolution formats are lost in even high-end setups. Benchmark saw clearly that the differences between a 16-bit recording and a 24-bit recording cannot be fully appreciated through a power amplifier that can only achieve 16 to 18-bit performance.
That's why we created the AHB2, a perfect match to the new high-resolution digital formats.
Benchmark's AHB2 power amplifier delivers musical details without introducing the masking effects of amplifier noise. The dynamic range of the AHB2 approaches 130dB, making it 10 to 30dB quieter than the typical audiophile power amplifier. You will discover previously overlooked nuances, dynamics, and detail in your favorite recordings and experience the full potential of the latest high-resolution 24-bit PCM and 1-bit DSD audio formats.
The frequency response of the AHB2 extends beyond 200kHz, to deliver the ultrasonic detail and fast transients captured by high-resolution recordings. At the other end of the audio spectrum, the low-frequency response extends below 0.1Hz. The AHB2 has a high damping factor that augments its extended low-end to deliver solid, well-controlled bass. It's a stunning experience to finally hear full bandwidth high-resolution playback. The AHB2 allows you to escape the distortion limitations of classic amplifier topologies and enter the world of high-resolution audio playback.
Class AB amplifiers generate crossover distortion every time the output stage crosses 0 volts. This crossover distortion can be especially problematic at low playback levels. Class A output stages eliminate this crossover distortion at the expense of high power consumption, poor damping, and a limited dynamic range. THX recently patented two new technologies that address crossover distortion, and Benchmark incorporated these innovations into the AHB2 design. These new innovations virtually eliminate crossover distortion while offering opportunities to improve efficiency, damping, and dynamic range. The licensed technology solves the crossover problem by combining a plurality of output stages such that one stage drives the output while another stage enters a crossover region. Distortion performance exceeds that of class A amplifiers, while the efficiency exceeds that of traditional class AB amplifiers.
For more information about Benchmark's AHB2 visit: http://www.highresolutionplayback.com
The A.H.B. Story
The AHB2 power amplifier is named in honor of Benchmark's founder, Allen H. Burdick. Allen had a life-long passion for audio, and became one of the leading innovators in the pro-audio industry.
Allen's business ventures began in 1983 as "Benchmark Sound Company" where he operated from his garage in Dallas, Texas. He surrounded himself with a staff that shared his passion for achieving new audio performance "benchmarks". Benchmark's first product was a large mixing console for television and radio broadcast applications. In 1985, Allen changed the business name to Benchmark Media Systems, Inc., and relocated to a facility in his hometown of Syracuse, New York. By this time Benchmark was manufacturing the DA101 audio distribution amplifier for television studios. Allen's DA101 was a 35 W power amplifier card with astonishing specifications. It had a 150 kHz bandwidth, and a dynamic range of over 120 dB. The DA101 was designed to distribute line-level audio through extensive distribution networks. Television networks often require many cascaded distribution amplifiers, and this places extraordinary demands on the performance of each individual amplifier. Allen's DA101 revolutionized audio distribution in the era of analog TV.
Allen retired in 2006, but Benchmark continued to develop new products under the direction of John Siau. Allen's DA101 was never marketed as a power amplifier, but it became Benchmark's amplifier of choice for critical listening tests during the development of Benchmark's digital products. The recent development of the DAC2 converter family highlighted the need for a power amplifier that could match the performance of the converter, and Benchmark began the "PA2" amplifier project.
In many ways, Allen's DA101 helped define the performance goals of the PA2 project. Early prototypes were evaluated against the DA101. Benchmark's performance goals were achieved through the use of two new patented topologies from THX, the application of good engineering, and a high level of cooperation between the engineering groups at both companies. The result is an amplifier that Allen would have been proud to call a "Benchmark".
Sadly, Allen passed away September 27, 2013. Just minutes before his death, we changed the product name to AHB2 in his honor.
Benchmark Media Systems, Inc. is a privately-held manufacturer of precision audio electronics providing leading-edge performance to audio professionals and enthusiasts for over 30 years.

NEWS RELEASE 10/8/13 AURALiC LIMITED has announced its introduction of the GEMINI 2000 and 1000 Headphone Docks, the first entries in an entirely new and revolutionary personal audio product category. Breaking audio's rigid design envelope, the GEMINI Headphone Docks combine several highest quality headphone-oriented audio components plus full-format decoding in a compact, self-contained and visually appealing curvilinear shape.
Named after the constellation Gemini, representing the mythological twins Castor and Pollux, the two GEMINI Headphone Docks include a full-format Digital Audio Converter (DAC), a Class-A headphone amplifier, an integrated SD Extended Capacity (SDXC) card reader holding up to 2 terabytes of music, and attractive headphone + cord storage.
The GEMINIs are designed by AURALiC LIMITED, utilizing an exclusive profile licensed from an award-winning Swedish firm dedicated to the merger of high-quality sound and superior aesthetics, and bearing the tongue-in-chic name Klutz Design.
AURALiC's two GEMINI Headphone Docks break the mold by breaking the box. Their unique, consumer-friendly lifestyle design shatters a longstanding audio mold with a new Form Factor that subverts the stereotypical rectangular box into which amplifiers and DACs are traditionally squashed. Standing less than 12 inches high and weighing a comforting 6.2 pounds, which insures rock-solid stability, each GEMINI Headphone Dock visually resembles an abstracted sculpture of the human head and neck. The sculpted upper portion is a precisely milled wood chassis exhibiting a mirror-like finish with five coats of hand-polished lacquer in any of five colors - black, white, red, yellow and blue.
The GEMINIs' organic Form-as-Function contours are ideal for headphone storage and include two metal knobs for securely winding headphone cable. Except for the headphones resting astride them (instead of in a pool of cable on a table or floor), the GEMINIs don't even look like traditional audio products, and are sure to be popular as a Lifestyle product.
For Living Room, Library, Bedroom, Office, Yacht & Private Jet
The GEMINIs' bases, precisely milled and highly polished, provide heavy brass foundations that house a variety of connections and dissipate heat better than the lighter-weight aluminum more typically used for audio components. The base comes in two finishes - gold and chrome - for the GEMINI 2000, and Titanium gray for the GEMINI 1000, providing consumers with multiple custom design options.
Because the GEMINIs' form factor is so compact, they are far more portable than any similar suite of components. Standing less than a foot high, they can be used almost anywhere - beside a couch, on a desk, atop a bedside stand, in a living room, a library, a bedroom, an office, a yacht or a private jet - and be taken along to a weekend home or on a vacation. Because of their craftsman-quality wood and metal construction, they will look good virtually anywhere, and with any interior decor, especially as purchasers can select the GEMINIs' lacquer colors to suit their homes or other locations.
The Headphone Docks' compact size also conceals brilliantly miniaturized amplifier and DAC technology from AURALiC's VEGA Digital Audio Processor and TAURUS MKII Balanced Headphone Amplifier - both multiple award-winning products in the worldwide audiophile field. The heart of the Docks is an exclusive, ingeniously designed, printed circuit board that hosts more than 500 components on a platform the size of a human palm. The frequency response covers a full 20 Hz - 20 KHz range with an exceptional THD of less than 0.001% at rated output for the GEMINI 2000, and less than 0.002% for the GEMINI 1000.
Both GEMINI models support all high-resolution music formats, including DXD, DSD and double-rate DSD as well as sampling rates from 44.1K to 384K. Their amplifier sections provide Class-A headphone power outputs up to 2000 milliWatts in Class-A for the GEMINI 2000, more than enough to drive any higher-quality model; and 1000mW of Class-A power for the GEMINI 1000. In Greek mythology, Bia is the Titan Goddess of force and power.George Counnas, president of Zesto Audio admits, "I'm verypleased that Bia's reputation remains intact."
George goes to his Pro-Audio roots and his background in tube circuitry from his college days in England to describe his design philosophy as, "I wanted power without compromising the music. It should be easy to use, reliable and with plenty of power to drive speakers, to bring out the best detail in the music."
George says, "I like Class A design because the tubes are always on, so the power is fast and responsive.
The Bia 120 has Auto-Bias so there are no adjustments. It delivers 60 Watts per channel using a matched quad of KT88's and four 12AU7's. The power supply incorporates a custom Toroid power transformer and a choke based dual-mono power supply. The circuitry design is Ultra-Linear, Push-Pull to deliver the most precise, enjoyable and faithful reproduction as possible.
For more information and complete specs please visit our website: www.zestoaudio.com
George Counnas is the founder, president and design engineer for Zesto Audio. He has loved music all his life and went from a musician, to an electronics engineer, to an audio engineer. As a young man in England, he designed vacuum tube circuits. He worked for DECCA Navigator (now Raytheon)-- at the time Britain's largest electronics company -- as part of a research and development team designing airborne navigational systems for the Royal Air Force. NEWS RELEASE 10/1/13 The new JL AudioE-Sub Powered Subwoofers—thee110ande112deliver unprecedented levels of subwoofer performance at prices well within the reach of any serious audio enthusiast.
A series of JL Audio's key technologies have been applied to the E-Subs to deliver exceptional sound quality, power and value in a wide range of demanding applications.
Any great powered subwoofer system must start with an exceptional subwoofer driver. The E-Subs' subwoofer drivers offer impressive, low-distortion excursion envelopes capable of handling the most demanding program material, or the most delicate. To accomplish this, JL Audio's exclusive DMA technology is applied to shape, control and stabilize the drivers' motor strength, ensuring linear behavior over a very long excursion range. Unlike typical steady-state modeling systems, our approach takes into account the dynamic shifts created by current flow and back EMF under real power conditions, with real program material. The payoff offered by DMA optimization is a driver that more faithfully tracks its input signal at all listening levels, leading to superior bass definition and dynamics.
The extreme mounting depth of the E-Sub driver is very deliberate. It permits wide gaps to exist between the three suspension elements (the rubber surround and the dual spiders), imparting exceptional mechanical stability over the driver's full excursion range. This further improves linearity, reduces distortion and enhances long-term reliability. In a stroke of engineering elegance, the steel front mounting flange of the E-Sub driver also forms the entire front baffle of the finished product, while the back-plate of the driver is threaded and bolted to the rear wall of its enclosure for support.
To power these innovative drivers, JL Audio engineered a completely new switching amplifier with a regulated, switching power supply. This approach helps make the amplifier more compact, lightweight and efficient, while still delivering ample, clean power to fully exercise the E-Sub driver's performance envelope.
The amplifier module also incorporates a studio-grade signal-processing section, which is controlled from a panel on the top of the subwoofer cabinet making adjustments on an E-Sub a much more enjoyable experience than adjusting the rear-mounted controls found on most powered subwoofers. An attractive cover is also included to hide and protect the controls during normal use.
The feature set has been designed to allow the use of E-Subs in a wide range of applications, from full home theater systems to dedicated two-channel music systems, to desktop audio workstations.
Analog inputs are provided for unbalanced line-level signals or speaker level signals. Using a rear panel switch, the line level inputs can be configured as grounded or isolated, which is very useful in combating ground-related noise problems.
The built-in, active crossover is a true two-way, 4th order Linkwitz-Riley design, with a low-pass filter feeding the subwoofer's amplifier and a high-pass filtered signal exiting through a pair of line outputs. When the on-board crossover is defeated, as is typical in a home theater installation, the line outputs deliver a pass-through signal that permits multiple E-Subs to be interconnected in a 'daisy-chain' arrangement. Switchable polarity and a fully variable phase control round out the signal processing section. All signal processing is performed in the analog domain, ensuring very low latency in critical applications.
Every E-Sub is precision-built in JL Audio's U.S.A. factory and individually performance-verified and tested to deliver years of listening enjoyment in your home audio or home theater system.

About The Sound Organisation
NEWS RELEASE 10/1/13 SVS, a worldwide leader in high performance home audio products, announces availability of the SoundPath Subwoofer Isolation System, an affordable and discreet alternative to traditional platforms and risers designed to improve sound quality while reducing pesky floor vibrations that can cause sonic rifts between sub owners and their neighbors or roommates. The Isolation System comes in packages of four (standard) or six elastomer feet (larger subwoofers), with three popular thread sizes to accommodate virtually any subwoofer, SVS brand or otherwise.
Decoupling a subwoofer from its surroundings has a number of positive effects. For one, the floor doesn't offer its own sonic signature or boom to the performance; resulting in cleaner, tighter bass. Plus, as anyone who's ever cranked a subwoofer up to reference levels can attest, the buzzing and rattling of dishes, light fixtures, furniture and other room décor that results can be distracting and take away from the subwoofer's true calling. With the SVS SoundPath Isolation System installed, a subwoofer is unburdened by the room it resides in and free to produce crisp, impactful lows.
Audio science dictates that a bass drum is more
likely to cause consternation among neighbors and roommates than a flute, even
when played at the exact same volume. Why? Bass from movies and music is heard
more perceptibly than mids or highs because the longer wavelengths of low
frequency sound waves travel further and pass more freely through air and matter
at an atomic level. To address the complaints that can arise from having a
killer subwoofer, SVS extensively researched sound performance using
accelerometer and acoustic measurements to develop the SoundPath Subwoofer
Isolation System, engineering it to significantly reduce floor noise by
absorbing the vibrations that normally get transferred into floor.
The optimized durometer elastomer feet that make up the system feature a durable anodized steel outer shell and steel machine screws with thread sizes of ¼-20, M6 or M8, to fit almost any brand of subwoofer. Super easy to install with an understated yet elegant finish, the SVS SoundPath Subwoofer Isolation System is available now for $49.99 (four foot system) and $69.99 (six foot system).

NEWS RELEASE 9/28/13 For the first time in America – LARSEN's Ortho-Acoustic speakers
The LARSEN speakers have a long and proud pedigree. The famous Sonab speakers from the 60's and 70's were designed by the Stig Carlson, who later developed his own speakers: Carlsson Ortho-Acoustics. Stig dedicated his life to methodically examining the interaction between speakers, the room and the listener. Specifically, how early room reflections affects timbre and soundstage. That resulted in a row of speakers over the years. His last and most successful constructions were the breakthrough OA-50 series that he designed and built with John Larsen. After working with Stig for 16 years John Larsen took over production in 1997 and further improved upon these innovative design principles to build the LARSEN speakers, resulting in the current top model, the LARSEN 8.
LARSEN speakers excel in taking advantage of the room they play in; meaning speakers, made to function in regular living rooms and not only in anechoic sound studios. Does that sound self-evident? It's not. Still today, the majority of today's ultra high-end speakers are designed to work best when they are unaffected by the room they play in.
The LARSEN speakers seeks to emulate the live sound you hear at concerts. At orchestra concerts the instruments are lined up, but if you close you eyes, this clear separation between the instruments becomes less focused when you listen. Direct sound from the instruments, as well as reflected sound from boundary surfaces, hits you. The combination of direct and reflected sound envelopes you and you perceive the music as an organic whole. LARSEN speakers seek to recreate this natural and realistic sound in your home.
One of the biggest factors to how music sounds in your home is the room you play in and the placement of the speakers. Conventional speakers release a bombardment of distorting sound reflexes, that can be somewhat reduced by modern room treatment, but it doesn't solve the basic problem. LARSEN speakers are designed by incorporating how the speaker plays WITH the room, not against it; enriching the listening experience, instead of degrading it.
By placing the speaker against the wall, angling the drivers slightly up- and inwards, and flanking the drivers with absorption material, LARSEN speakers eliminates early distorting sound reflections allowing the right combination of direct and reflected sound, creates a rich three-dimensional soundstage with a wide listening area, bringing you closer to that elusive live sound.
And because the timbre, the tonal balance and the soundstage is much more life-like and a visceral reminder of reality, it makes it easier for us to absorb the music and all the feelings music provides. Which is probably why many musicians prefer LARSEN speakers when they listen to music.
The LARSEN speakers also have a high WAF factor (wife approval factor) because they are designed to stand against the wall, thus taking up less space.
LARSEN currently have three models starting at $1995. Larsen 4, Larsen 6 and the current top model, Larsen 8. Available in cherry, maple, wine-red, black and white. Larsen 3, a budget model is expected to arrive in the US later in the year.
Each LARSEN speaker is built and tested, one at a time, in Sweden by John Larsen himself.
A review by Larry Cox of the Larsen 8 speakers will appear in October's Positive Feedback. For questions or additional information please contact:

NEWS RELEASE 9/28/13 exaSound Audio Design today announces the immediate availability of the e28 Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC). The e28 is the world's first high-end, eight-channel DAC capable of DSD playback at a 12.288MHz (DSD256) sampling rate. The e28 extends exaSound's line of high-end DAC's and offers music lovers a new level of performance unobtainable from any DAC currently offered in the marketplace.
"The e28 represents another market first for exaSound and marks an important move in broadening our product portfolio," said George Klissarov, President of exaSound Audio Design. "The predecessor to the e28, the e20 MK III, was the only consumer-oriented DAC capable of achieving DSD256 at 12.288 MHz. With the release of the e28, we have again extended that performance level by introducing multichannel sound capability and a third-generation headphone amplifier."
exaSound's mission is to allow music lovers to enjoy any studio-master file the way it is recorded, in stereo or multichannel, in PCM or native DSD, without down-sampling or down-conversion.
The new performance features offered in the e28 will allow music lovers to experience an unmatched level of audio reproduction. While the e20 supported the reproduction of two-channel recordings, the e28 supports recordings of all formats and channel configurations without users having to change any device settings. In addition, the e28 supports the reproduction of up to eight-channels without compromising the e20's exceptionally high sampling rates.
With the eight-channel capability of the e28, listeners can recreate the three-dimensional richness captured in multichannel recordings: the ambience of the original recording venue, or the in-orchestra soundstage experience from the aural vantage point of the performing musicians. For those who like to listen through headphones, the headphone amplifier on the e28 offers more power with less distortion, thus allowing a wider range of headphones to be used with the device.
The e20 Mk III and the e28 are the first consumer DACs introduced in the marketplace which are capable of covering a range of formats, from PCM up to 384 KHz/32bit, and DSD up to12.288 MHz. Like its predecessor, the e20, the e28 has exceptionally low levels of jitter, distortion and noise, while creating an astonishingly clean analog-like sound. Detailed specifications and reviews of the e28 are available at www.exaSound.com.

NEWS RELEASE 9/21/13 Introducing Exakt - a new revolution in hi-fi, which has turned the loudspeaker into an intelligent, connected, software-upgradeable product.
Exakt, a ground-breaking, new Linn technology builds on Linn DS to extend the lossless digital path all the way to the speaker, keeping the signal digital and only converting to analogue at the last possible stage to ensure absolute accuracy of data, guaranteed low latency, extremely low jitter, and extreme precision synchronisation between speakers.
Introducing the new Klimax Exakt System
Linn has launched the Klimax Exakt System, comprising Klimax Exakt DSM and Klimax Exakt 350 Speakers. Exakt combines and improves on three key Linn innovations – Source-First, Aktiv, and DS – to radically improve the performance of the music system. Exakt is the most direct connection ever made between the listener and the artist. It sends digital data to an Exakt speaker losslessly to eliminate sources of noise, distortion and interference inherent in the traditional analogue hi-fi chain, meaning that a Studio Master file, or any other music source, is transmitted perfectly to the speaker. Inside the Exakt Speaker is a digital platform that enables a whole new range of audio performance enhancing capabilities in design, manufacture and in the customer's home.
Eliminates in Design
In design, the intelligence built into Linn Exakt phase corrects every signal, eliminating the phase and magnitude distortion introduced by analogue crossovers, ensuring 100% accuracy in every single crossover.
Corrects at Manufacture
In manufacture, physical variation between parts is inherent in even the most accurate processes, however Exakt measures and corrects for even the tiniest variation between drive units, meaning every system that leaves the factory is guaranteed to perform exactly to its specification, guaranteeing a perfect speaker.
Optimised at Home
In the home, the Exakt system is optimised to suit
every individual's room using powerful new Linn software and Linn specialist
retailer expertise. The customer now has the flexibility to choose where they
would like their system positioned to fit around their lives without
compromising the sound they hear. As with all Linn DSM players, all sources can
be connected for improved performance. Even vinyl sounds better – there's no
better way to preserve the signal from an LP12 than Exakt. New ADC technology
converts the delicate LP12 to digital and sends it losslessly to the speaker,
better protecting the signal than any other solution.
Linn design and make the best music systems in the world. Based in Scotland and established since 1972, Linn manufacture everything in-house, from the electronics in our industry-leading Linn DS technology to the loudspeakers found in homes around the world. The iconic Sondek LP12 turntable continues to set the standard for vinyl playback and the latest digital stream players out-perform any CD or network music player available. Linn systems are sold through a worldwide network of specialist retailers who also share a passion for enriching people's lives through music. Linn were awarded a Royal Warrant in 2002, as suppliers of entertainment systems to the Royal Household, and received the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation in 2012. Linn also record music too and Linn Records is home to celebrated artists such as Carol Kidd, Claire Martin and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, with recordings available from Linn and other high-quality labels via our award-winning Studio Master music downloads service. Awarded 'Label of the Year' by Gramophone magazine for 2010-11, Linn Records were the first label to release Studio Master downloads without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

NEWS RELEASE 9/21/13 PSB Speakers, long renowned for affordable excellence in loudspeaker design, introduced four new CustomSound speakers designed for high performance custom installation. Two new in-wall (W-LCR, W-LCR 2) and two in-ceiling (C-LCR, C-SUR) models offer the same natural sound that PSB is known for along combined with high quality construction and remarkable ease of installation.
All four CustomSound models feature premium materials such as Clay/Ceramic-filled, Polypropylene cone woofers with rubber surround, 1" Titanium dome tweeters with Ferrofluid cooling, Sealed MDF backboxes, frameless magnetic grilles, and gold-plated spring-loaded binding posts. Pre-construction brackets are available to order.
W-LCR ($799 MSRP) - an In-Wall, 2-Way design features two 5 ¼" Woofers combined with PSB's renowned 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter to provide a natural sound that is perfect for stereo music or as a left, center or right speaker in home theater applications. These can also be used as surround speakers for 5.1 and 7.1 systems.
W-LCR 2 ($999 MSRP)- an In-Wall, 3-Way design adds a 4" Midrange driver in addition to the two 5 ¼" Woofers providing enhanced output capability and lower distortion, especially at high SPLs. The Midrange and Tweeter are mounted together on a rotatable sub-baffle to provide perfect dispersion characteristics whether mounted vertically or horizontally. This makes the W-LCR 2 perfect for use as a Center speaker in a home theater or for ultra-high performance stereo presentations in larger rooms.
C-LCR ($799) - In-Ceiling design usesthe same driver complement as the W-LCR but due to the additional depth offered by ceiling mounting provides a useful increase in sensitivity and bass extension. The C-LCR offers an optimal solution for installations where wall mounting is not desired or practical (masonry walls for example). The driver angle has been carefully calculated for optimal dispersion characteristics and special damping material is used to prevent early reflections from the baffle, which could compromise stereo imaging and voice articulation.
C-SUR ($799) - the diffuse dispersion characteristics of the CustomSound C-SUR In-Ceiling dual mode speaker is perfect for side andbacksurround channels in a multi-channel home theater. Another interesting application is in long narrow spaces like corridors and hallways where one C-SUR can take the place of two or more In-Ceiling speakers while offering superior sonic performance with fewer amplifier channels and easier installation.
Unlike other In-Wall and In-Ceiling speakers whose performance is compromised by the very structures into which they are installed; PSB includes a superbly engineered enclosure that ensures the acoustic integrity of the design in every installation.
For years, PSB's speakers have been hailed by critics and music lovers alike for their clear midrange presence, uncluttered bass, smooth extended highs and natural sound. The new CustomSound in-wall and in-ceiling speaker not only embody these sonic attributes, they are cleverly designed to provide flexible configurations that custom installers will readily appreciate.
The new CustomSound models can be utilized on their own or combined with other PSB speakers to create a truly customized Home Theater package.
Coaxing this high level of performance from a custom speaker with narrow depth is an engineering feat, however 40 years of experience along with a deep working knowledge of acoustics gives PSB Speakers a clear advantage. Like all PSB Speakers, final voicing is performed by Paul Barton at Canada's famed National Research Council. PSB's research has revealed how listener preferences can be integrated into a wide range of speaker designs for many different applications, yet all featuring consistent sound quality that is natural and lifelike.
"Properly designing an architectural speaker like our CustomSound models requires a thorough understanding of acoustics to get sound that is true-to-nature," explained Paul Barton, Founder and Chief Designer of PSB Speakers. "PSB has perfected the tools required to get the optimal result for every loudspeaker application. The CustomSound speakers are voiced to perfectly integrate with other PSB models of In-Room, On-Wall and subwoofers."
Lenbrook will be showing the new PSB CustomSound models at CEDIA Expo in Denver, Colorado September 26-28 in Booth # 1624.
Founded in 1972, by renowned speaker designer Paul Barton, PSB is a leading speaker brand celebrating more than forty years of innovation and value. Now sold in more than thirty countries around the world, for music or movie listening, the company has set the standard for high-performance, high-value speakers. PSB products are distributed in U.S. by Lenbrook America.
NEWS RELEASE 9/21/13 NAD Electronics, the highly regarded manufacturer of high-performance audio/video components, introduced a pair of high-resolution headphones: the VISO HP50 ($299 MSRP) full-size, over-the-ear headphone as well as the VISO HP20 ($169) in-ear model. Both are designed for the music lover seeking exceptional performance, comfort and value.
With sumptuous ear pads for comfort and isolation, the HP50 is a full-size, over-the-ear design, featuring RoomFeel ™ technology for deep bass and a lifelike sonic experience. The HP50 features a convenient Apple 3-button multi-click remote with microphone. It is available now in a choice of Black, White or Red gloss finishes.
The NAD VISO HP20 ($169 MSRP) is an in-ear, noise-isolating headphone of all alloy construction that also features RoomFeel technology for a richer, more natural experience. The HP20 also includes an Apple three button remote with microphone for convenient hands-free operation. HP20 is available now in choice of Black or Silver.
The HP50 and HP20 are the newest members of NAD's VISO Series, a collection of high-performance, lifestyle technology products that includes the award-winning VISO 1.
At the heart of the HP50 is a pair of ultra-low mass, high excursion 40mm drivers set in optimized acoustic chambers for tight, articulate bass and natural sound. Internal wiring is OFC (Oxygen Free Copper) for maximum signal transfer and minimal loss.
Voiced for a flat response, the HP50 and HP20 headphones were developed by Paul Barton noted speaker designer from sister company PSB. Working at NRC (The National Research Council of Canada) and using the KEMAR dummy head testing system, Barton discovered the addition of low frequency room gain that one would expect to hear with normal loudspeakers in a room. This is the same room gain compensation transfer function (+3 dB/octave boost from 200Hz down to 50Hz) that was developed in the Athena Project at NRC.
These findings have led PSB to a unique feature the company calls Room Feel™. Room Feel makes music sound more natural by taking into account the effects of the room on music playback. Almost all recorded music is monitored using direct radiating loudspeakers to determine the acoustic balance for the final mix. The transfer function NAD developed for their HP50 headphone takes into account the "room gain" that occurs when playing direct radiator loudspeakers in a room. The result is a much richer and more natural listening experience.
Comfort and Ergonomics
The HP50 and HP20 were ergonomically designed to be comfortable even when worn for long periods of time. The ESO ear pads on HP50 are oval to better fit around the ear for comfort as well as provide a good acoustic seal for sound isolation. An Ergo hinge design allows the ear pads to freely rotate to further facilitate an optimal fit.
For additional comfort and convenience, there are two 1/8 inch input connectors (one on each ear cup) making it easier to connect the cord near the source amplifier. Doing so, helps eliminate having the cord cross in front of the listener.
For HP20, five different size, soft Silicone Ear Tips are supplied to provide a good fit and comfort for virtually any ear.
Convenience and Ease of Use
The HP50 and HP20 are designed for easy storage and transport. HP50 is supplied with a leatherette travel case with a handy accessory organizer where HP20 has a neoprene travel case with a mini-storage pouch for easy access. For both models, two detachable, tangle-free cords are supplied: a regular stereo headphone cable as well as an Apple-approved 3-button multi-click remote with microphone for full control of all Apple music and call functionality right at the fingertips. Also supplied are a 1/4 inch adapter and a dual 1/8 inch airplane adapter for use with a variety of sources. Premium materials built into the HP50 and HP20 to provide durability and carefree good looks.
"NAD has given a great deal of thought to what our headphones will bring to the table. Combining our audio know-how with the tremendous design expertise of Paul Barton and his decades of experience at the NRC, we have produced both full-size and in-ear headphones with remarkable sound, comfort and convenience." commented Greg Stidsen, Director of Technology and Product Planning for NAD. "I know that headphone enthusiasts will readily see and hear the HP50 and HP20 as products worthy of serious consideration and ones that proudly bear the NAD name."
As with most NAD and PSB products, industrial design was handled by noted designer David Farrage of DF-ID.
Founded in 1972 and now sold in over 80 countries, NAD Electronics is renowned for its award-winning line of high quality components for audio, home theater and custom installation applications. The company's products consistently deliver outstanding performance, value and simplicity. With over forty years of innovation and value, NAD products are proudly distributed in the U.S. by Lenbrook America.

NEWS RELEASE 9/21/13 High End sound from a Bose Wave Radio? Some thoughts from our Lead Designer Ted
Denney III on his greatest achievement to date.
I then turned my attention to cleaning up AC with the invention of the Electromagnetic Cell as found in our PowerCell AC line conditioners, Tranquility Bases and Galileo Cable Cells. Next I focused on acoustic tuning through sympathetic resonance as found in our Acoustic ART and MiG resonators. The culmination of my life's work has been a lifting of veils from recorded music playback with a resulting increase in sound stage, lowering of the noise floor for a more realistic portrayal of live music, increased micro and macro dynamics and a more lifelike reproduction of space and air.
But my latest invention, to be unveiled at this year's RMAF in Denver, will be by far my most significant contribution to the world of audio. These devices are unobtrusive, easy to implement, and very easy to afford. They neither compete with nor replace any current Synergistic Research technologies, but rather supplement the performance of my other products while dramatically transforming even ordinary systems to a level of performance that will amaze everyone.
In short, this new technology is a game changer with the potential to transform
audio as we know it. To make this point crystal clear I will be demonstrating
this new technology with nothing more than a Bose Wave Radio at the 2013 RMAF in

NEWS RELEASE 9/21/13 Iconic, cult, legendary: only a product that inspires passion and remains in demand after 25 years earns this level of acclaim. Launched in 1988, Sennheiser's HD25 has come to define the ultimate DJ headphone. Alongside the launch of a new edition – the HD25ALUMINIUM, the anniversary is being marked by 25 of the world's greatest DJs, who wish the iconic headphone a "Happy Birthday" and explain its essential role in their music and performance.
Top DJs and their HD25s – The stories and memories
Over the past 25 years many of the world's greatest DJs have selected Sennheiser's HD25 as their first choice of headphone, with some using theirs over years and even decades. That enduring appeal is expressed by 25 of the world's leading DJs (and HD 25 fans), who send their birthday wishes in a special film by Sennheiser. Star DJs including QBert, Bob Sinclar, and Luciano describe how their HD25s become an integral part of performance and the experience of music itself. They also share stories of their first DJ performances, describe the feeling of playing to an audience and the role their headphones play in delivering a great performance. To watch the Happy Birthday HD25 video and exclusive DJ interviews, visit www.sennheiser.com/dj.
That special something: What makes the HD25 the perfect DJ headphone?
Built for a life behind the decks, the HD25's highly insulated rotatable capsules deliver high levels of background noise attenuation, make one-ear monitoring easy, and stay comfortable when worn for long periods. And the daily punishment of professional use is more than matched by its robust build quality and serviceability.
But keeping the world's greatest DJs happy is about more than the features and specifications. For DJ legend and four-time DMC champion QBert, the magic of the HD25 is its precise signature sound, a characteristic that's prized by many DJs: "My ears are accustomed to the Sennheiser sound. I love that the HD25s have a flat sound, so you hear how the music really is – not coloured, but pure – the way the artist wanted to put their music out. I'll be using these for 50 years – 100 years "
"I've been using the HD25 for a long time and Sennheiser headphones even longer – they made the first headphones I ever used " said Swiss-Chilean DJ, Luciano. Likewise, Canadian superstar DJ Mike Shannon has found over the course of his career that the HD25s are built to last: "I've been using the HD25s since they came out," he explains. Commenting on the sound performance, which offers tightly controlled bass and detailed treble while handling high sound pressure levels, Shannon said: "The clarity of the sound, it's a clean reference – it's very real. In the studio, listening to a mix, the sound is tight – it's one to one with how it's intended."
Like Shannon, Parisian electro house DJ, producer and label boss Martin Solveig has had a lifelong affair with the HD25: "I've never ever DJed without it. If you look online at the pictures of all my performances and every party you'll never see me using another headphone. It's the only piece of equipment I've never changed. The reason is the same reason everyone will tell you – it's the best headphone. The response is linear enough to be trusted even in a studio or recording situation. Of course, I know the sound, and it matches the references in my head – I'm formatted to this headphone "
In daily use, performance has to be matched with comfort and durability. Ibiza legend and Pacha resident Andy Baxter explains that the headphones' longevity also reflects its perfect blend of both sound and a robust design that offers a great fit over long periods of use: "I've been using the HD25 for many years now – there's no more comfortable headphone out there that can deliver such good sound quality, for myself and for many of my favourite DJs that use the HD25, too. Happy 25 years of listening pleasure to the one and only Sennheiser
The HD 25 ALUMINIUM – The cult classic reborn
Marking the 25-year milestone, Sennheiser has launched the HD25ALUMINIUM, a new version featuring a unique, premium aluminium construction. Taking the legend into the future, the HD25ALUMINIUM naturally delivers peerless sound quality in a headphone that is now even more desirable. With earcups lathed individually from single blocks of strong, lightweight aluminium, the HD25ALUMNIUM is ready for a lifetime in the DJ booth. Find out more at: sennheiser.com/hd-25-aluminium

NEWS RELEASE 9/21/13 Bowers & Wilkins launches P7 headphones
Bowers & Wilkins' P7 headphones deliver an enveloping, pristine listening experience. A combination of new drive-unit technology, luxurious materials, and a clever folding design, make the P7s Bowers & Wilkins best mobile hi-fi headphones yet.
Bowers & Wilkins is proud to announce the P7 Mobile Hi-Fi headphones. Our first over-ear headphones, the P7s provide a truly immersive listening experience, combined with the luxurious comfort and impeccable build quality you expect from Bowers & Wilkins.
With the P7s, everything is designed to allow you to lose yourself in music. Thanks to the technological advances we've made with these headphones, sound performance is a revelation. Bass is tighter, vocals are more defined, and there's a wonderful sense of space, balance, and clarity across the entire frequency range.
For the P7s we've drawn on everything we know about speaker technology and built it into a set of mobile headphones. New drive unit technology and Bowers & Wilkins famed attention to detail mean that the P7s offer a giant leap forward in sound quality. At the same time, the over-ear design and snugly fitting ear pads allow you to listen without unwanted interruptions.
Because when you're hearing sound this good, you don't want anything to interrupt your enjoyment of it.
The all-encompassing ear cushions not only provide noise isolation and high levels of comfort, their dual-cavity construction helps the pads mold to the contours of the wearer's head. This design maintains a consistent volume of air between the drive unit and the surface of the ear at both sides of the head. Not only is stereo imaging enhanced - the sound is optimized for every listener.
As with all Bowers & Wilkins headphones, no corners were cut in terms of the P7s' build quality and choice of materials. Moving parts are constructed from brushed and stainless steel, as is the ingenious folding mechanism. The logo plates are crafted from brushed aluminum. The headband and ear pads are encased in luxuriously soft leather, making them a delight to wear even for long listening sessions. The P7s also features a detachable remote-control- and-microphone cable.
The result of all of this attention to detail, advanced technology, and choice of materials is the best-performing Bowers & Wilkins headphones yet: the P7s.
With most headphones, sound quality is compromised by the way drive-units are designed. To save space, the diaphragm must perform the dual role of sound generator and suspension system. But for the P7 we have created a headphone driver that works more like the drive-unit in a hi-fi speaker, with a diaphragm focused purely on the job it's supposed to do: generate sound.
The internal speaker baskets encasing the P7s' drive-units are perforated with air vents covered with a resistive film. This unique design allows for precise control of the airflow from behind the drive-unit, resulting in a more uniform, piston-like movement. Plus, while the voice coil of most headphones are made from copper, the P7s' voice coils are constructed from a lighter aluminum-copper compound. The decrease in weight means that the drive-unit can move more freely, improving high frequency dynamics.
The P7's speaker baffle plates are constructed from a polymer material that has been heavily braced and tuned to make it very rigid and inert. This limits any resonances that might color the sound of the headphones. Finally, damping material inside the speaker enclosure helps control and dampens internal reflections, further reducing coloration and distortion. All of this means a drive-unit with a more precise, controlled movement, capable of producing outstanding levels of performance.
The Bowers & Wilkins P7 headphones are available in September, priced at $399.99
The Bowers & Wilkins P5 is available now, priced at $299.95
The Bowers & Wilkins P3 is available now, priced at $199.99
The Bowers & Wilkins C5 is available now, priced at $179.00

NEWS RELEASE 9/15/13 THIEL Audio winner of over 60 prestigious awards for loudspeaker design and performance since 1978, has appointed Mark Mason as the company's new Director of Product Development. Mason represents the first in-house engineering presence for the brand since the passing of Jim Thiel in 2009.
Mark Mason brings a depth of engineering experience combined with a broad range of technical capabilities to THIEL after nearly a decade as Design Team Manager at PSB. Mason's expertise includes critical applications such as driver design (the term "driver" refers to the woofer, midrange and tweeter components that make up most dynamic loudspeakers), Class D amplifier design and high performance acoustic systems design (referring to a completed loudspeaker including drivers, crossover networks and enclosures). "I heard about THIEL quite a long time ago and I have tremendous respect for what the brand has achieved in the three decades plus since it was founded," explained Mason. "I am honored that I have an opportunity to be a part of THIEL's future and help evolve this storied organization," Mason added.
Mason has demonstrated success as a creative thinker and team leader with a proven history of bringing premium audio products to market in a timely manner. "I have been fascinated by loudspeaker design since childhood and have a great passion for seeking out the highest possible levels of performance," Mason explained. "One of the aspects of THIEL that excites me is the domestic manufacturing capability here in Lexington, Kentucky—I have an opportunity to take a vision from the earliest stages of development and work with the factory every step of the way to achieve the desired results," Mason stated. "This gives me vastly more control over performance and quality than if I were handing drawings off to overseas contract manufacturers," he added. Mason is confident that he can first evaluate and then manage the technology, people, and processes together at THIEL to achieve great things for the brand. "I am thrilled at the prospect of designing and overseeing a lineup of ultimate quality loudspeakers across multiple market segments, such as high performance floor-standing models, custom installation products and loudspeakers for home theater," said Mason.
Since THIEL was acquired earlier this year, the new ownership group has been focused on a fresh approach to product engineering and industrial design while leveraging the strong heritage of the company. Mason's appointment as Director of Product Development is in concert with this carefully orchestrated new vision for THIEL. "I have many years of association with Mark at PSB and watched him grow into a world-class talent in all phases of speaker design and manufacturing," stated THIEL COO Bob Brown. "Mark is perfectly suited to take the product development reins at THIEL—it has been years since the company has had anyone of Mark's breadth of experience driving engineering," Brown added.
"While we have kicked off a major new product development initiative, the timing for Mark's arrival could not be more ideal," said THIEL CEO Bill Thomas. "He has worked with our North American Sales Manager and our industrial designer in the past very successfully and I anticipate this team reaching full stride very quickly," continued Thomas. Part of the new vision for the brand includes a more regimented new product development process and cycle, making the company more vital in the marketplace and of increased value to the sales chain. "We have expended great effort to bring the necessary human resources to THIEL so that engineering, manufacturing, marketing, sales and administration are all working together," Thomas concluded.
Most recently, Mason was Director of Product Development for Specialty Technologies (SVS), where he was accountable for all aspects of the company's product management strategy and execution. Over the years, Mason's designs have garnered numerous prestigious awards such as The Absolute Sound Editor's Choice, Sound & Vision Certified and Recommended, Sound & Vision Editor's Choice, Home Cinema Best Buy, Best Home Cinema Room (S&V Bristol Show), SoundStage Great Buy, AV Forums Best Buy, EISA Best Product, Audioholics Consumer Excellence, Stereophile Recommended Components, Electronic House Product of the Year.
